{"id":101567,"date":"2019-08-01T15:00:28","date_gmt":"2019-08-01T19:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=101567"},"modified":"2023-12-01T10:40:53","modified_gmt":"2023-12-01T15:40:53","slug":"another-national-honor-for-one-of-ucfs-physics-faculty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/another-national-honor-for-one-of-ucfs-physics-faculty\/","title":{"rendered":"Another National Honor for One of UCF\u2019s Physics Faculty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For a second consecutive year, one of UCF\u2019s physics faculty members has been selected for the Department of Energy\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/articles\/department-energy-selects-73-scientists-receive-early-career-research-program-funding\">Early Career Research Program.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Physics Assistant Professor Luca Argenti is one of 73 scientists across the nation and the only one from Florida selected for the program, which includes a $750,000 grant over five years.<\/p>\n<p>Argenti\u2019s work is in energy science. His goal is to advance the study of electronic excitations in matter, which are at the core of any chemical transformation, including those used to produce energy from fossil&nbsp;fuels or to&nbsp;harvest it from sunlight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElectronic excitations are extremely difficult to monitor in real time because they take place&nbsp;on a fantastically short timescale \u2014 tens or hundreds of&nbsp;attoseconds, where&nbsp;one attosecond is one billionth of a billionth of a second,\u201d says Argenti, who has a joint appointment in the College of Optics and Photonics. \u201cTo give you an idea of the scale, one attosecond is to a second what&nbsp;a second is to twice the&nbsp;life of the universe.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_101573\" style=\"max-width: 250px;\" class=\"figure float-left\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"figure-img  img-fluid w-100 size-full wp-image-101573\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/20\/files\/2019\/08\/luca-a-doe.jpg\" alt=\"Man wearing glasses and vest with pink shirt\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/20\/files\/2019\/08\/luca-a-doe.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/20\/files\/2019\/08\/luca-a-doe-214x300.jpg 214w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\"><\/noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"figure-img  img-fluid w-100 size-full wp-image-101573 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%22%20viewBox%3D%220%200%20250%20350%22%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" alt=\"Man wearing glasses and vest with pink shirt\" srcset=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%22%20viewBox%3D%220%200%20250%20350%22%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/20\/files\/2019\/08\/luca-a-doe.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/20\/files\/2019\/08\/luca-a-doe-214x300.jpg 214w\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/20\/files\/2019\/08\/luca-a-doe.jpg\"><figcaption class=\"figure-caption\">Luca Argenti<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Argenti moved to the United States from Italy in 2016 to join UCF because of its reputation in this field, thanks to the pioneering work of Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/ucf-researchers-set-record-fastest-light-pulse\/\">Zenghu Chang<\/a> in the college\u2019s Center for Research and Education in Optics and Lasers. Chang has twice set the record for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/ucf-researchers-set-record-fastest-light-pulse\/\">fastest light pulse<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Energy award program, in its 13th year, is designed to bolster the nation\u2019s scientific workforce by providing support to exceptional researchers during the early career years, when many scientists do their most formative work.<\/p>\n<p>To be eligible, a researcher must be an untenured, tenure-track assistant or associate professor at a U.S. academic institution or a full-time employee at a DOE national laboratory who received a doctorate within the past 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>View the <a href=\"https:\/\/science.osti.gov\/-\/media\/early-career\/pdf\/Combined-Early-Career-Abstracts-FY-2019_07-26-2019.pdf?la=en&amp;hash=CA7B15BF57E0C47DF95E8E38163002CC5B4E4FA1\">full list of honorees<\/a> and descriptions of their projects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSupporting our nation\u2019s most talented and creative researchers in their early career years is crucial to building America\u2019s scientific workforce and sustaining America\u2019s culture of innovation,\u201d says Department of Energy Secretary Rick Perry. \u201cWe look forward to their achievements in the years ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/ucf-physicist-selected-750000-early-career-energy-grant\/\">physics Assistant Professor <strong>Michael Chini<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;&#8217;12PhD<\/strong><\/a> was selected for the same award. Chini also works in the area of attosecond physics and together with Argenti they will co-chair the ATTO (Attosecond Science and Technology) conference in 2021. They will bring the most influential biannual&nbsp;world congress in this field to UCF that summer, a move to help bring attention to UCF as a powerhouse for this field of study.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFederal agencies&nbsp;allocate their funds based on the recommendations of scientific leaders from all around the world,\u201d Argenti says. \u201cHolding ATTO 2021 here can go a long way&nbsp;to enhance UCF&nbsp;visibility&nbsp;abroad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Argenti holds multiple degrees including a doctorate in chemistry with a thesis in theoretical atomic physics from the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa in Italy. He was a postdoctoral fellow at Stockholm University in Sweden and at the Autonomous University of Madrid in Spain.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Energy
