{"id":103450,"date":"2019-10-07T11:37:34","date_gmt":"2019-10-07T15:37:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=103450"},"modified":"2019-10-07T11:37:34","modified_gmt":"2019-10-07T15:37:34","slug":"assessing-the-toll-of-chemical-warfare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/assessing-the-toll-of-chemical-warfare\/","title":{"rendered":"Assessing the Toll of Chemical Warfare"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jenna Dovydaitis has been interested in the intersection of public health and international security ever since she can remember.<\/p>\n<p>Growing up, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/political-science-ba\/\">political sciences<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/biology-bs\/\">biology<\/a> double major and <a href=\"https:\/\/honors.ucf.edu\/admissions\/burnett-medical-scholars\/\">Burnett Medical Scholar<\/a> says, \u201cmy version of the superhero was always that doctor that saves the day from a super disease that takes over the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That passion for science and geopolitics has only grown at UCF. And so, a lot of terrorism scholars predict their usage is only going to continue as the future of war and conflict develops.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As she read the existing literature on Anfal, she learned about the lingering health consequences of being exposed to mustard and Sarin gas &nbsp;\u2014 a long list that includes chronic respiratory ailments, burns, damage to the eyes and an increased incidence of cancer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut what I didn\u2019t find a lot on was how a society recovers from such a massive incident of chemical warfare,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>To get those answers, she would need to go to Iraqi Kurdistan, a country nearly 7,000 miles away that she had never stepped foot in. Fortunately, her program of study gave her a way in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Kurdish Political Sciences program is really well connected to the university system in Iraqi Kurdistan, and so we have many connections to professors and politicians in that area,\u201d Dovydaitis says.<\/p>\n<p>Dovydaitis spent two weeks doing on-the-ground fieldwork this summer, shuttling between the capital city of Erbil and other areas affected by the genocide. There, she interviewed the former deputy minister of Anfal and Martyrs, Baravan Hamdi Hussein, as well as activists, politicians, medical professionals, town council members and government lawyers.<\/p>\n<p>She also met with survivors, documenting first-hand accounts of the genocide\u2019s emotional and psychological toll. In the mountainous rural town of Halabja, \u201cI met a mother who lost all of her children,\u201d she says. \u201cI met a father who lost his wife and children, people losing eight to ten family members in a day.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt didn\u2019t seem like anyone I met in that town wasn\u2019t somehow affected by what happened.\u201d \u2013 Jenna Dovydaiti, UCF student<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t even begin to imagine how horrible that would be, to lose all of my siblings and the people I love in a single day. It didn\u2019t seem like anyone I met in that town wasn\u2019t somehow affected by what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The experience left a profound impression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had an academic understanding of my topics of study before I got there,\u201d Dovydaitis says. \u201cBut it really was quite different to meet the people who are actually affected by it, and to gain a sort of emotional understanding.
