{"id":106348,"date":"2020-01-28T17:42:54","date_gmt":"2020-01-28T22:42:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=106348"},"modified":"2020-08-21T11:29:02","modified_gmt":"2020-08-21T15:29:02","slug":"vasu-receives-200000-microsoft-investigator-fellowship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/vasu-receives-200000-microsoft-investigator-fellowship\/","title":{"rendered":"Vasu Receives $200,000 Microsoft Investigator Fellowship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Microsoft has announced that Associate Professor Subith Vasu has received the company\u2019s inaugural Investigator Fellowship, worth $200,000, which recognizes higher education faculty in the U.S. who have demonstrated extraordinary talent that distinguishes them as both teachers and researchers.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Vasu is one of only 15 awardees selected in the nation and the only person representing the mechanical engineering discipline.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Close to 300 applications for the fellowship were submitted, but only 15 awardees were selected. Vasu is the only faculty member from UCF, as well as the only awardee from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree-search\/search\/mechanical%20engineering\/\">mechanical<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/aerospace-defense\/\">aerospace<\/a> engineering discipline, to receive this award.<\/p>\n<p>The funding can be applied to any research project of his choosing. All candidates are encouraged to incorporate the Microsoft Azure software into their research and teaching, something Vasu is looking forward to.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt feels great and I like the fact that they are one of the most respected companies. Almost everybody on a daily basis uses Microsoft products, so it\u2019s an honor to be associated with them,\u201d Vasu says. \u201cAlso, I\u2019m excited about using the tools they have. As times change, we have to change, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft Azure is an online, cloud-based computing software that allows users to build, test, deploy and manage applications. Vasu has already started using it in his research to develop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/85621-2\/\">a sensor that can detect trace amount of opioids<\/a>, a project funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. The sensor would be part of a handheld device that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/pegasus\/helping-the-helpers\/\">first responders and the military can use to prevent accidental exposure to the deadly toxins<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Vasu and his team in the <a href=\"http:\/\/mae.ucf.edu\/VasuLab\/\">Vasu Lab<\/a> will use Azure to analyze the \u201cfingerprints\u201d of opioids, or the unique identity of each molecule.
