Sea level rise and hurricanes are a threat to sea turtle nesting habitat along national seashores in the Southeast,\u00a0but a new study predicts the greatest impact to turtles will be at Canaveral National Seashore.<\/p>\n

The University of Central Florida-led study, which was published\u00a0recently in the journal\u00a0Ecological Applications<\/em>, examined loggerhead and green sea turtle nests to predict\u00a0the\u00a0amount of beach habitat loss at Canaveral, Cumberland Island, Cape Lookout,\u00a0and Cape Hatteras\u00a0national seashores by the year 2100. Sea turtles help maintain the coastal ecosystem and are indicators for the health of sandy beaches.<\/p>\n

When comparing sea turtle nesting density with predicted beach loss\u00a0at the sites, they found\u00a0nesting habitat loss\u00a0would not be equal.\u00a0The researchers predicted that by 2100, Canaveral would lose about 1 percent of its loggerhead habitat, while the three other seashores will lose between approximately 2.5 to 6.7 percent each. Although Canaveral\u2019s percentage loss is smaller, the impact at this national seashore will be greater because of its nesting density.<\/p>\n

\u201cCanaveral is part of the core loggerhead nesting area for the Southeast,\u201d says Marta Lyons, a preeminent postdoctoral fellow in UCF\u2019s\u00a0Department of Biology<\/a>\u00a0and the study\u2019s lead author.\u00a0\u201cThe nests are\u00a0already pretty well packed in there, so even a small loss of area\u00a0can have a big impact on nesting sea turtle populations.\u201d<\/p>\n

To determine beach loss at the study sites, the researchers\u00a0used sea\u00a0level rise\u00a0and storm surge\u00a0estimates and\u00a0considered\u00a0the effects of\u00a0impervious structures along the shorelines, such as roads and buildings, in restricting natural beach movement. To do this, they developed a new method to calculate\u00a0current and future sea turtle nesting areas that takes into account nesting data, beach length and width, and the impact of impervious surfaces.<\/p>\n

Lyons says one of the goals was\u00a0to create\u00a0digital\u00a0maps\u00a0for the\u00a0National\u00a0Park Service\u00a0to understand how sea turtle nesting\u00a0areas\u00a0will\u00a0change with sea level rise\u00a0and how resources could be\u00a0managed.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs\u00a0the National Park Service\u00a0thinks about future developments, whether that’s putting in a new lifeguard station\u00a0or\u00a0new bathrooms,\u00a0this\u00a0method\u00a0of calculating current and future sea turtle nesting area\u00a0can help them decide where to put them,\u201d\u00a0she says.<\/p>\n

The study was funded by the National Park Service and the University of Central Florida\u2019s Preeminent Postdoctoral Program.<\/p>\n
