{"id":107799,"date":"2020-03-24T16:45:07","date_gmt":"2020-03-24T20:45:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=107799"},"modified":"2020-09-02T10:45:40","modified_gmt":"2020-09-02T14:45:40","slug":"trustees-approve-first-4-partners-for-cancer-center","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/trustees-approve-first-4-partners-for-cancer-center\/","title":{"rendered":"Trustees Approve First 4 Partners for Cancer Center"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UCF\u2019s Board of Trustees approved Tuesday the first four partners for a new\u00a0university\u00a0cancer center that will bring a new level of cancer care and research to Orlando\u2019s growing Medical City.<\/p>\n<p>Trustees approved four leases that will bring in $1.87 million a year in rent of the $2 million-a-year mortgage payment UCF is\u00a0initially\u00a0making on the center.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/college\/medicine\/\">College of Medicine<\/a> leaders continue seeking other partners.<\/p>\n<p>The first four tenants in the cancer center are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sarah Cannon Research Institute, the cancer research arm of HCA Healthcare, the nation\u2019s largest hospital corporation and UCF\u2019s partner in building UCF Lake Nona Medical Center, its new teaching hospital. Sarah Cannon\u00a0is the largest provider of cancer care in the nation, serving more than 2.5 million patients a year. It will lease\u00a019,562 square feet of UCF\u2019s center\u00a0for clinical research,\u00a0clinical trials and\u00a0drug discovery.<\/li>\n<li>Florida Cancer Specialists, a large oncology physician practice with locations across Florida and Central Florida. It will lease\u00a06,974 square feet for patient care.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0Radiation Oncology Department of UCF Lake Nona Medical Center. It\u00a0will lease\u00a014,263 square feet of space and build\u00a0a vault next to the cancer center for radiation therapy.<\/li>\n<li>Clinical Education Shared Services, HCA\u2019s Simulation and Education Center, that will train healthcare providers across the hospital corporation\u2019s North Florida region. It will rent 16,953 square feet for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/modeling-simulation\/\">clinical simulation<\/a> and classroom space.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The cancer center, in the former Sanford Burnham\u00a0Prebys\u00a0research facility, also has extensive wet lab space. UCF\u00a0will use about half of the building for College of Medicine cancer researchers\u00a0and other university scientists. With the first four leases approved,\u00a0UCF\u00a0and its partners\u00a0can begin demolition and refurbishing to create a center where physicians treating cancer patients and scientists discovering new treatments will work under the same roof \u2013 all next door to UCF\u2019s new hospital.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThis cancer center will serve our patients, our students and our scientists.\u201d &#8211; Deborah German, UCF College of Medicine dean<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Deborah German, vice president for health affairs and founding dean of the UCF College of Medicine, told trustees the medical school is meeting with\u00a0other potential partners who wish to rent space in the new cancer center.\u00a0Those parties will provide additional revenues\u2013 and additional programs to serve cancer patients and their families.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis cancer center will serve our patients, our students and our scientists,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>UCF purchased the Sanford Burnham\u00a0Prebys\u00a0institute after that facility announced it was closing.
