{"id":121846,"date":"2021-07-28T10:36:31","date_gmt":"2021-07-28T14:36:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=121846"},"modified":"2022-04-01T11:05:51","modified_gmt":"2022-04-01T15:05:51","slug":"when-medicine-is-a-family-affair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/when-medicine-is-a-family-affair\/","title":{"rendered":"When Medicine is a Family Affair"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Manuel Carrazana teared up as he watched his identical twin daughters collect their white coats, marking their journey to become physicians \u2014 a career he gave up when he migrated from Cuba to pursue a better life for his family.<\/p>\n<p>His daughters, Ana and Anela, are among three sets of siblings \u2014 including two sets of twins \u2014 in the Class of 2025. The 122 new students began their first day of medical school during July 26\u2019s White Coat Ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>In Cuba their father was a general surgeon, but when he came to the U.S. his Cuban-issued qualifications did not allow him to practice medicine. Instead, he went back to school and became a nurse practitioner, and works at the Baptist Health South Florida in Miami. His wife Eliana, formerly an agricultural engineer in Cuba, now teaches kindergarten. The twins\u2019 older brother, Manuel Jr., recently completed his internal medicine residency with the UCF-HCA Graduate Medical Education consortium and is now a core faculty with the program based at Osceola Regional Medical Center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeeing my kids getting through medical school is like a dream come true,\u201d Manuel Carrazana says.&nbsp;\u201cWhen I talk about it, I get so sentimental because, I left everything in Cuba hoping to find something better for them, so for me this is a completion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The twins studied nutritional sciences at the University of Florida and chose medicine because of their mutual love of helping others and also to honor their father\u2019s sacrifice. Their mother, Dr. Shirin Hasan, is pediatric psychiatrist at Nemours Children\u2019s Hospital.&nbsp;Their father, Dr. Donald Centner, is an ophthalmologist in Orlando and served in the U.S. Navy for more than 30 years as a pilot, flight surgeon and ophthalmologist.<\/p>\n<p>Growing up in Orlando in a family of physicians, the twins attended UCF for undergrad, and say they were drawn to medicine because they realized the impact their parents had on patients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne time, when we were around 5 or 6, we were in the clinic with our mom, and a young girl about our age ran to our mom, hugged her, and said, \u2018I love you Dr Hasan.\u2019 My mom gave her a hug back and said \u2018I love you too.\u2019 We were confused and asked her if she really loved that little girl,\u201d says Safia, who also wants to be a pediatrician.<\/p>\n<p>It was then that their mother explained the special relationship that happens between a doctor and patient. It\u2019s going to be pretty cool to grind it out together in med school,\u201d Nicholas says.<\/p>\n<p>Ashley is a Cornell University graduate who majored in biomedical engineering and once worked with a team of neurosurgeons to help design and patent a port system to drain fluids from the brain during surgery. She hopes to combine her love for engineering and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/healthcare\/\">medicine<\/a> to pursue a career in surgical oncology or cardiology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want a career that allows me to work with my hands and connect with patients,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Several sets of twins and siblings were a part of College of
