Called the Biomechanics, Rehabilitation, and Interdisciplinary Neuroscience (BRaIN) Lab, students and faculty use electroencephalography (EEG) technology to measure the electrical activity of the brain during movement. But something even more is happening in the lab \u2014 the next generation of women in science and technology is being developed.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed oembed oembed-video d-flex flex-column align-items-center\">\n<div class=\"embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\"><noscript><iframe title=\"UCF Celebrates International Women in Engineering Day, Featuring the BRaIN Lab\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ln0xOars74c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript><iframe title=\"UCF Celebrates International Women in Engineering Day, Featuring the BRaIN Lab\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ln0xOars74c?feature=oembed\" class=\" lazyload\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Helen Huang, the principal investigator of the lab and associate professor in <a href=\"https:\/\/mae.ucf.edu\">mechanical and aerospace engineering<\/a>, understands firsthand how STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) is dominated by men. Nationally, just 25% of those working in computer occupations are women, and just 15% of engineers and architects are women, according to the Pew Research Center. But with women like Huang in STEM leadership roles, those numbers can change \u2014 something International Women in Engineering Day seeks to influence as it celebrates the work of women engineers annually on June 23.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the most important thing [for women in STEM] is to have a supportive network,\u201d Huang says. \u201cSurround yourself with people who will encourage you to pursue what you\u2019re interested in. (Photo by Kadeem Stewart &#8217;17)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the BRaIN Lab, Huang helps student researchers conduct human subject experiments and analyze large sets of data from the brain, muscles and body during challenging balance and walking tasks. By measuring electrical activity of the brain, computer algorithms can estimate where and when areas of the brain activate during movement \u2014 valuable insight that can design better robotic devices and rehabilitation for those with impaired movement.<\/p>\n<p>For Lindsey Lee, seeing the BRaIN Lab was an \u201caha\u201d moment. While studying a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/mechanical-engineering-bsme\/\">bachelor\u2019s degree in mechanical engineering<\/a> \u2014 which she just graduated from this spring \u2014 she discovered the lab and a way to combine her passion for sports, movement and math. Since, she\u2019s worked in the lab to analyze people\u2019s patterns of walking in response to perturbations on a treadmill and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0966636223000814?via%3Dihub\">recently published findings in <em>Gait &amp; Posture<\/em><\/a> that young and older adults increase their walking speed when a treadmill shifts rapidly from side-to-side, disrupting the normal walking pattern. Next, she will continue to analyze these findings and others in the BRaIN Lab while pursuing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/biomedical-engineering-ms\/\">master\u2019s degree in biomedical engineering<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving Helen as a mentor has solidified my interest in the field and she\u2019s encouraged me and helped build my confidence to continue onto graduate school,\u201d Lee says. \u201cI think it\u2019s great to see a successful woman in this field. (Photo by Kadeem Stewart &#8217;17)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For Shayla Hoa, a sophomore in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/mechanical-engineering-bsme\/\">mechanical engineering<\/a>, the BRaIN Lab and Huang\u2019s success also have influenced her career interests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI often find myself surrounded by male classmates, but witnessing Helen\u2019s remarkable career achievements and the strides she\u2019s made has given me a sense of assurance to persevere,\u201d Hoa says. \u201cThe BRaIN Lab has given me hands-on experience conducting human-subject experiments and collaborating with more experienced peers who I can depend on for guidance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Huang hopes interest in the BRaIN Lab and biomedical engineering continues to grow. She feels it will at UCF, as <a href=\"https:\/\/mae.ucf.edu\/master-of-science-in-biomedical-engineering\/\">master&#8217;s<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/mae.ucf.edu\/bmephd\/\">doctorate degrees in biomedical engineering<\/a> are now offered. Limbitless Solutions, a nationally recognized nonprofit at UCF that designs and builds personalized prosthetics more affordably thanks to its 3D-printing technology, also has brought more attention to the growing field. UCF also offers a <a href=\"https:\/\/mae.ucf.edu\/minor-in-bioengineering\/\">minor in bioengineering<\/a>, which prepares students for careers in medical research and development.<\/p>\n<p>As understanding of brain activity and human movement grows, ultimately Huang hopes to help preserve mobility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe end game is to make sure everyone can maintain their mobility,\u201d she says. \u201cMobility is a big part of our quality of life. It can greatly impact what we do, our mood, our ability to be independent.
