{"id":136798,"date":"2023-08-22T12:04:30","date_gmt":"2023-08-22T16:04:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=136798"},"modified":"2025-06-18T11:18:53","modified_gmt":"2025-06-18T15:18:53","slug":"ucf-names-joseph-harrington-as-interim-associate-vice-president-for-research-and-scholarship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/ucf-names-joseph-harrington-as-interim-associate-vice-president-for-research-and-scholarship\/","title":{"rendered":"UCF Names Joseph Harrington as Interim Associate Vice President for Research and Scholarship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Central Florida Office of Research has announced the appointment of Joseph Harrington, a Pegasus Professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/physics\/\">Department of Physics<\/a> and UCF\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/fsi.ucf.edu\/\">Florida Space Institute<\/a>, as the interim associate vice president for research and scholarship.<\/p>\n<p>In this role, Harrington\u2019s duties will include overseeing UCF\u2019s institutes and centers and research strategy councils; participating in collaborative efforts with the Faculty Senate Research Council; directing Institutional Review Board and Office of Animal Welfare operations; participating in academic program reviews and assisting in implementing strategic research initiatives to drive increased research, scholarship and creative works.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJoe brings valuable experience as a former Faculty Senate Chair and longtime UCF faculty member,\u201d says Winston Schoenfeld, UCF\u2019s interim vice president for research and innovation. \u201cHe has a true passion for establishing strategic initiatives to support UCF faculty success, and we are fortunate and delighted to have him join the Office of Research leadership team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>History of Innovative Research<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Harrington began observing and modeling giant planets as an undergraduate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he earned his bachelor\u2019s in physics and doctoral degree in planetary science. His pre-impact model of the collision of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with Jupiter in 1994, part of his Ph.D. thesis, was published on the cover of <em>Nature<\/em> and garnered international popular attention.<\/p>\n<p>Harrington then held a National Research Council Fellowship at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, during which he modeled the aftermath of the Shoemaker-Levy 9 impact and also identified the majority of planetary waves known on planets other than Earth. From 1997 to 2006, he worked as a staff scientist at Cornell University, where his interests shifted to observing extrasolar planets. He was part of the team that first measured light from an extrasolar planet, a result published in <em>Nature<\/em> in April 2005.<\/p>\n<p>He joined UCF\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/planets.ucf.edu\/\">Planetary Sciences Group<\/a> in the Department of Physics, part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/\">College of Sciences<\/a>, in 2006, where he continued his exoplanet work by being the first to measure the difference between day and night on an exoplanet. His recent work includes the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/james-webb-space-telescope-detects-carbon-dioxide-on-planet-outside-solar-system\/\">detection of carbon dioxide on a planet outside the solar system<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/ucf-is-part-of-team-that-finds-water-on-ultra-hot-exoplanet-with-james-webb-space-telescope\/\">finding water on an ultra-hot exoplanet<\/a>, both using the James Webb Space Telescope. A leader in the open-source and open-science movements, he worked on a National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine study that defined the open-science policies now implemented in NASA\u2019s grant programs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Experienced Faculty Leader<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Harrington has been a member of UCF\u2019s Faculty Senate for 10 years and has served on numerous committees, including the Senate\u2019s Steering, Bylaws, Governance and Information Technology committees. He served as chair of the Faculty Senate and on the UCF Board of Trustees from 2020 to 2022, guiding UCF\u2019s response to COVID-19 and the development of UCF\u2019s strategic plan.<\/p>\n<p>He was one of five founding faculty in UCF\u2019s planetary science program, which established <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/physics-phd\/planetary-sciences\/\">Ph.D.<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/physics-ms\/planetary-sciences\/\">M.S.<\/a> tracks in physics and began accepting students in 2009. He also developed and taught graduate <em>Planetary Atmospheres<\/em> and <em>Advanced Astronomical Data Analysis<\/em> and undergraduate <em>Introduction to Numerical Computing<\/em>.\u00a0 His most recent course was a section of introductory astronomy taught entirely through a video game, with no separate textbook or lecture.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, Harrington was named a UCF Pegasus Professor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unleashing Potential<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Harrington says he\u2019s excited to join the Office of Research, where he can help foster innovation and empower faculty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA university&#8217;s research office should be a place where faculty eagerly go for help in turning our ideas and ambitions into results that advance knowledge and improve society,\u201d Harrington says. \u201cI look forward to connecting with faculty in every college to learn what our best opportunities are, to learn what faculty need to make them reality, and to develop and execute a strategy that helps all faculty achieve our biggest scholarly visions.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Harrington\u2019s duties will include overseeing UCF\u2019s institutes and centers and research strategy councils;
