{"id":142367,"date":"2024-07-25T12:00:30","date_gmt":"2024-07-25T16:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=142367"},"modified":"2024-07-24T13:20:11","modified_gmt":"2024-07-24T17:20:11","slug":"ucf-biology-student-wins-statewide-aylesworth-scholarship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/ucf-biology-student-wins-statewide-aylesworth-scholarship\/","title":{"rendered":"UCF Biology Student Wins Statewide Aylesworth Scholarship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Luciana Banquero, a graduate student studying marine science in <a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/biology\/\">UCF\u2019s biology department<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/college\/sciences\/\">College of Sciences<\/a>, has won the notable Aylesworth Scholarship from Florida Sea Grant. The scholarship will provide $3,000 a semester over two years for Banquero to pursue her studies in ocean science.<\/p>\n<p>The Aylesworth Scholarship was established in 1984 through a joint partnership between the Aylesworth Foundation for the Advancement of Marine Science, the\u202fSoutheastern Fisheries Association\u202fand the Florida Sea Grant College Program. Aylesworth scholarships are named annually, with a few students selected among undergraduate and graduate student applicants across all Florida universities that conduct research in the marine sciences. (Photo courtesy of the College of Sciences)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>CEELAB provides opportunities for UCF students studying biology in the College of Sciences to work in the field, building hands-on experience. (Photo courtesy of the College of Sciences)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Banquero\u2019s experience through CEELAB was profound, providing her with opportunities to see nature and wildlife \u2014 including sea turtles and manatees \u2014 firsthand, as well as observe the human impacts on coastal environments.<\/p>\n<p>Her work in CEELAB stood out to Walters, who continues to see promise in Banquero\u2019s thesis work toward her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/biology-ms\/\">master&#8217;s in biology<\/a> at UCF.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is a determined person and has wonderful insight and tenacity that will serve her well as a scientist,\u201d Walters says. \u201cLuciana is a very worthy recipient of the Aylesworth Scholarship and has a bright future in marine science.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe experience I have had as a student at the College of Sciences has been lifechanging,&#8221; Banquero says . \u201cI\u2019m doing things that have surprised me and found a path forward.
