{"id":151572,"date":"2026-03-18T07:10:28","date_gmt":"2026-03-18T11:10:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=151572"},"modified":"2026-03-18T07:10:28","modified_gmt":"2026-03-18T11:10:28","slug":"progressing-the-final-frontier-of-medicine-space","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/progressing-the-final-frontier-of-medicine-space\/","title":{"rendered":"Progressing the Final Frontier of Medicine: Space"},"content":{"rendered":"<hr>\n<p>UCF\u2019s leading space medicine experts, valued strategic partners and an astronaut who holds NASA\u2019s record for spacewalks will gather April 10 in Lake Nona\u2019s Medical City to discuss how they can work together to keep space travelers healthy and use that research to create groundbreaking clinical innovations on Earth.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cStar Nona 2026\u201d event is led by the Lake Nona Research Council, which is focused on encouraging interdisciplinary scientific partnerships between industry, academia and healthcare.<\/p>\n<p>The council includes physicians and researchers from UCF, Orlando Health, AdventHealth, the <a href=\"https:\/\/fsi.ucf.edu\/\">Florida Space Institute<\/a>, the Orlando VA Medical Center, Nemours Children\u2019s Health, business and industry.<\/p>\n<h2>Star Nona 2026 Event Details<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cOur goal is to bring together space medicine leaders and experts from academia, medicine and the space industry to find more ways we can work together to research <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/ucf-space-medicine-initiatives-are-taking-off\/\">the health impacts of space flight<\/a> and how our discoveries can also improve healthcare on Earth,\u201d says Michal Masternak, UCF professor of medicine.<\/p>\n<p>An anti-aging and cancer researcher, Masternak leads the Lake Nona Research Council\u2019s space medicine research group. UCF graduate students and post-doctoral scientists will also present research posters on space medicine.<\/p>\n<p>The plenary speaker is NASA astronaut Robert Curbeam, a U.S. Navy captain who completed four spacewalks during space shuttle Discovery\u2019s 2006 mission to the International Space Station.<\/p>\n<h2>The Space Coast\u2019s College of Medicine<\/h2>\n<p>Located 45 miles west of the Space Coast and Kennedy Space Center, UCF\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/college\/medicine\/\">College of Medicine<\/a> is the perfect partner to chart a new frontier in healthcare as humans prepare for longer missions to the moon and Mars, and commercial space flights take more civilians into space.<\/p>\n<p>The goal: explore how factors such as microgravity, radiation and isolation impact the human body in space and how that knowledge can drive innovation into diagnostics, treatment and disease prevention on Earth.<\/p>\n<p>To further those efforts, UCF has created a new Center for Aerospace and Extreme Environments Medicine (CASEEM), which includes UCF faculty experts in medicine, engineering, computer science, psychology, arts and educational leadership. This interdisciplinary group will work together to research and develop new technologies for keeping space travelers healthy, as well as soldiers on military missions, deep sea explorers and mountain climbers.<\/p>\n<h2>About the Lake Nona Research Council<\/h2>\n<p>Edward Ross, the College of Medicine\u2019s chair of medicine and assistant dean for research, leads the Lake Nona Research Council.<\/p>\n<p>Ross says Star Nona and the partnerships it creates will help solidify UCF and Medical City\u2019s reputation as a premier center for space medicine.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhen people think of keeping space visitors healthy, we want them to immediately think UCF.\u201d \u2014 Edward Ross, College of Medicine\u2019s chair of medicine<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAs a university, UCF was born to create the workforce to send humans to the moon,\u201d he says. \u201cWe\u2019re continuing that legacy with space medicine.
