{"id":152212,"date":"2026-04-14T10:49:06","date_gmt":"2026-04-14T14:49:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=152212"},"modified":"2026-04-14T10:51:27","modified_gmt":"2026-04-14T14:51:27","slug":"ucf-materials-science-undergraduate-researcher-awarded-doe-internship-at-national-lab","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/ucf-materials-science-undergraduate-researcher-awarded-doe-internship-at-national-lab\/","title":{"rendered":"UCF Materials Science Undergraduate Researcher Awarded DOE Internship at National Lab"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/materials-science-and-engineering-bs\/\">materials science and engineering major<\/a> isn\u2019t just studying sustainable methods of retrieving rare earth metals \u2014 she\u2019s developing new ways to do it.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has taken notice.<\/p>\n<p>Dene\u00e9 Lichtenberg was awarded the DOE\u2019s Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship, giving her the opportunity to further her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/research\/\">research<\/a> at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. This premier multidisciplinary research institution is advancing breakthroughs in science and technology to address national security challenges.<\/p>\n<p>The opportunity brings her closer to achieving one of her biggest goals: working at a national laboratory, where she\u2019ll collaborate with experienced researchers and learn how large-scale scientific projects are conducted.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_152366\" style=\"max-width: 150px;\" class=\"figure float-left\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"figure-img size-thumbnail wp-image-152366 img-fluid\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/20\/files\/2026\/04\/UCF_Denee-Lichtenberg-150x150.jpeg\" alt=\"UCF student Denee\u0301 Lichtenberg\"><\/noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"figure-img size-thumbnail wp-image-152366 img-fluid lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%22%20viewBox%3D%220%200%20150%20150%22%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" alt=\"UCF student Denee\u0301 Lichtenberg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/20\/files\/2026\/04\/UCF_Denee-Lichtenberg-150x150.jpeg\"><figcaption class=\"figure-caption\">Denee\u0301 Lichtenberg (Photo courtesy of UCF&#8217;s LM Lab)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Raised in Titusville, less than an hour away from UCF\u2019s main campus, Lichtenberg says she always knew she\u2019d attend UCF, especially given the strength of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/engineering\/\">engineering programs<\/a>. What she didn\u2019t yet know was how far that decision would take her.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The ability to design and improve materials that impact a variety of fields really motivated me to pursue this discipline.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>She found her path in materials science \u2014 a field where physics, chemistry and engineering intersect \u2014 which would allow her to study materials from the atomic level to real-world applications.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUltimately, everything is made up of materials,\u201d she says. \u201cBy changing a material\u2019s structure or composition, you can drastically alter its performance. The ability to design and improve materials that impact a variety of fields really motivated me to pursue this discipline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That curiosity has evolved into something bigger: tackling the challenge of sustainably recovering rare earth metals that are vital to the future of energy and technology.<\/p>\n<h2>Advancing Sustainable Extraction<\/h2>\n<p>Over the past year in the <a href=\"https:\/\/mse.ucf.edu\/kausik\/\">KM Lab<\/a>, led by Assistant Professor of Engineering Kausik Mukhopadhyay, Lichtenberg has focused on a breakthrough approach that uses a naturally occurring protein, lanmoudulin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe protein can capture rare earth elements from dilute waste streams, and then a small temperature change can trigger the protein to release them so they can be collected,\u201d she says. \u201cThis could create a more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly way to recover valuable materials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those materials are critical to everything from renewable energy systems to manufacturing; however, traditional extraction methods rely heavily on large amounts of energy and chemicals sourced from acid mine drainage, coal byproducts and electronic waste.<\/p>\n<p>Lichtenberg\u2019s work points to a sustainable future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy developing protein-based systems that selectively capture and release these elements, we could potentially reduce the reliance on traditional extraction,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>At Los Alamos National Laboratory, Lichtenberg will take that work further, designing modified proteins, producing them in the lab and testing how effectively they bind and release rare earth elements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a very exciting interdisciplinary project that combines protein engineering, materials science and sustainability,\u201d she says. \u201cI hope to continue this research after the internship ends.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>It Takes a Lab \u2014 and a Team<\/h2>\n<p>But just as impactful as the research has been, the environment that\u2019s shaped it has been.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Mukhopadhyay is a fantastic mentor who creates a very supportive and positive environment that encourages learning [both] in and out of the lab,\u201d Lichtenberg says. \u201cThe graduate students in the lab have [also] played a huge role in \u2026 helping me learn new techniques and [understand] the experiments and science itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Next, she plans to continue her journey as a Knight by pursuing a doctoral degree at UCF, advancing her research as a graduate member of the KM Lab.<\/p>\n<p>For Lichtenberg, this internship isn\u2019t the finish line \u2014 it\u2019s just the beginning of reimagining how the world sources its most essential
