The annual award recognizes excellence in product development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe work I do is very rewarding. Every day, I get to contribute to advancing medical care and treatment,\u201d McDorman says. \u201cIf it\u2019s a medical device and it has a wire, Alleima is likely contributing to it somehow.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_153252\" style=\"max-width: 150px;\" class=\"figure float-left\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"figure-img img-fluid w-100 wp-image-153252 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/20\/files\/2026\/05\/Cacie-McDorman_150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Woman wearing glasses and a dark blazer smiles in a professional headshot against a white background.\"><\/noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"figure-img img-fluid w-100 wp-image-153252 size-full lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%22%20viewBox%3D%220%200%20150%20150%22%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" alt=\"Woman wearing glasses and a dark blazer smiles in a professional headshot against a white background.\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/20\/files\/2026\/05\/Cacie-McDorman_150x150.jpg\"><figcaption class=\"figure-caption\">UCF alum Cacie McDorman \u201920 serves as global project manager for wire technology at Alleima Advanced Materials.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>McDorman earned her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/doctoral\/\">doctoral degree from UCF<\/a> under Associate Professor Swaminathan Rajaraman, who directs the <a href=\"https:\/\/nanoscience.ucf.edu\/rajaraman\/\">NanoBiosensors and Systems Laboratory<\/a>, where researchers develop micro- and nanoscale solutions spanning biotechnology, pharmacology, plant sciences and medical devices.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI chose UCF because the [materials science and engineering] program was highly rated &#8230; and had a wide variety of research areas &#8230;\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Before coming to UCF, McDorman earned her master\u2019s and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/physics-bs\/\">bachelor\u2019s degrees in physics<\/a>, but discovered a passion for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/research\/\">applied research<\/a> that required a deeper focus on materials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I decided to pursue a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/materials-science-and-engineering-phd\/\">Ph.D., materials science and engineering<\/a> was a natural choice,\u201d she says. \u201cI chose UCF because the program was highly rated, small and had a wide variety of research areas that I was interested in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Through her doctoral studies, McDorman found a more biology-focused side of materials science. Her work with biosensors in Rajaraman\u2019s lab ultimately inspired her to pursue a career in the medical device industry.<\/p>\n<p>She credits her research experience at UCF with preparing her for work at Alleima, where 90% of her unit\u2019s business supports medical device manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe company has a rich history of materials innovation in steel and nickel-based alloys,\u201d McDorman says. \u201cSince we produce wire, I am constantly using base materials science knowledge to process the material in a way that achieves a specific set of properties in the end product.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She says she has always aimed for a position that would allow her to make a positive contribution to society, an opportunity she is grateful to have at Alleima.<\/p>\n<p>For new graduates considering a similar path, McDorman encourages them to connect with UCF alumni on LinkedIn and to explore job opportunities in Florida\u2019s growing manufacturing industry, particularly in Volusia and Flagler counties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe put a lot into our work every day because we truly care about ensuring the best possible patient outcomes,\u201d she says. \u201cIt is
