{"id":153392,"date":"2026-05-26T10:33:09","date_gmt":"2026-05-26T14:33:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=153392"},"modified":"2026-05-26T11:59:53","modified_gmt":"2026-05-26T15:59:53","slug":"big-12-champ-ucf-rowing-at-ncaa-championship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/big-12-champ-ucf-rowing-at-ncaa-championship\/","title":{"rendered":"Big 12 Champ UCF Rowing Eyes NCAA Championship Next"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After earning an automatic bid to the postseason by sweeping the Big 12 Championship, the No. 12 rowing team now embarks on its second consecutive NCAA Division I Women\u2019s Rowing Championships appearance.<\/p>\n<p>The qualification marks the first time the Knights have advanced to the NCAA Championship in back\u2011to\u2011back years since making five straight appearances from 2015-2019 thanks to their dynasty of American Athletic Conference titles.<\/p>\n<p>Rowing is one of 10 UCF programs to compete at an NCAA postseason regional or championship event in 2025-26, joining&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/ucf-mens-soccer-earns-championship-bid-to-ncaa-tournament\/\">men\u2019s<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/ucf-womens-soccer-to-host-ncaa-tournament-first-round\/\">women\u2019s soccer<\/a>, indoor track &amp; field,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/pegasus\/march-to-madness\/\">men\u2019s basketball<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/ucf-tennis-teams-2026-ncaa-tournament\/\">men\u2019s and women\u2019s tennis<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/ucf-womens-golf-20th-ncaa-postseason-appearance\/\">women\u2019s golf<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/ucf-softball-continues-streak-of-ncaa-tournament-appearances\/\">softball<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/ucf-baseball-at-2026-ncaa-tournament\/\">baseball<\/a>. (Graphic courtesy of UCF Athletics)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Postseason Outlook<\/h2>\n<p>The Knights are looking to build off their Top 15 finish last year \u2014 the highest in program history.<\/p>\n<p>The NCAA Division I Women\u2019s Rowing Championships are comprised of 22 teams and provides three events (I Eights, II Eights and Fours), each covering a 2,000-meter course. Each team is required to field two boats of eight rowers each and one boat of four rowers.<\/p>\n<p>The event opens with heats on Friday, May 29, followed by semifinals on Saturday and finals on Sunday. UCF\u2019s boat seedings and heat sheets for day one are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>First 4+<\/strong>: UCF\u2019s highest\u2011seeded crew enters at eight. The Knights will race in Heat 1 against No. 17 Columbia, No. 9 Brown, No. 2 Stanford and No. 13 Miami, competing out of lane four.<\/li>\n<li><strong>First 8+<\/strong>: Seeded 10th, the Knights line up in Heat 2 with Boston, No. 3 Texas, No. 8 California and No. 14 Ohio State, racing from lane two.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Second 8+<\/strong>: Slotted as the 17-seed, UCF will face No. 11 Syracuse, No. 2 Stanford, No. 1 Tennessee and No. 14 Ohio State, launching from lane one.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>UCF\u2019s Road to the NCAA Championship<\/h2>\n<p>UCF has been ranked in the top 25 all season, climbing as high as No. 11 on the road to repeating as Big 12 champions.<\/p>\n<p>In her third season at the helm of the program, UCF head coach Mara Allen was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year for the second year in a row. She has led the Knights to first-place finishes in all but one race this season.<\/p>\n<p>Junior <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/kinesiology-bs\/exercise-and-sport-physiology\/\">kinesiology major<\/a> Brigitte Kappler was named Big 12 Rower of the year, keeping the honor in Orlando after senior Hannah Lovejoy claimed the distinction last year. Lovejoy, who graduated with her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/accounting-bsba\/\">accounting<\/a> degree earlier this month, went on to be recognized with Order of Pegasus this year.<\/p>\n<p>Freshman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/mechanical-engineering-bsme\/\">mechanical engineering<\/a> major Madison Lovejoy was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Year after competing
