{"id":20080,"date":"2011-02-09T12:30:14","date_gmt":"2011-02-09T17:30:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=20080"},"modified":"2022-09-15T10:03:15","modified_gmt":"2022-09-15T14:03:15","slug":"92-knights-took-a-shot-at-flu-prevention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/92-knights-took-a-shot-at-flu-prevention\/","title":{"rendered":"92 Knights Took a &#8216;Shot&#8217; at Flu Prevention"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nearly 100 members of the UCF community protected themselves from the flu as they gave back to the Knights Helping Knights Food Pantry during a health clinic on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>UCF Health Services administered 92 free flu shots to students and staff and faculty members who donated a non-perishable item to the pantry. The nonprofit food pantry, which was started by LEAD Scholars, collected 132 items.<\/p>\n<p>Influenza season peaks in February, and the shot \u2013 which protects against both seasonal and H1N1 flu strains \u2013 is still available to students for $12 and non-students for $25.<\/p>\n<p>Health Services will continue to administer flu shots on a first-come, first-served basis until supplies run out. The department is preparing for another health clinic this semester where free flu shots will be given.<\/p>\n<p>Getting a flu shot is considered one of the most effective ways to prevent the illness and protect others from it.<\/p>\n<p>Other ways to stay healthy include covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze; washing hands thoroughly and frequently throughout the day with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing; using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water is not accessible; not touching your eyes, nose and mouth; and avoiding close contact with sick people.<\/p>\n<p>If you get sick with influenza, stay home from work or school and limit your contact with others.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on UCF Health Services call 407-823-2701.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Nearly 100 members of the UCF community protected themselves from the flu as they gave back to the Knights Helping Knights Food Pantry during a health clinic on Monday.
