A special 30-minute program airing this month on UCFTV explores the advances being made in Central Florida as doctors and scientists work to crack the mystery of what triggers diabetes.<\/p>\n

Researchers are hot on the trail of the \u201csmoking gene\u201d that causes diabetes. Although no specific gene has been discovered yet, research happening right here in Central Florida is yielding some surprising clues.<\/p>\n

While sugar has always been indicative of diabetes, the inability by diabetics to burn fat may have some severe consequences as well. Fat creates hormones, some of which have been linked to heart disease and cancer.<\/p>\n

Designed for non-scientists, the 30-minute special showcases research at the University of Central Florida, Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute and Florida Hospital as their scientists and doctors race to find a cure.<\/p>\n

The diabetes special will air\u00a0on UCFTV<\/a> throughout June,\u00a0including Mondays through Fridays at 8 a.m. UCFTV is seen on Bright House Networks channel 1, Central Florida on Demand, Comcast digital cable channel 205 and over the air on digital channel 68.2.<\/p>\n

This health special also is the kind of unique, local content that will be part of the new offerings on WUCF TV.<\/p>\n

WUCF TV begins airing the national PBS schedule July 1 under a partnership agreement with Brevard Community College. BCC\u2019s television station, WBCC, has been in operation for two decades and broadcasts the UCFTV channel.<\/p>\n

The new WUCF TV channel will be seen over the air on digital channel 68.1. The UCF-BCC partnership is working with cable and satellite providers to determine the channels that will carry WUCF TV, UCFTV and WBCC beginning July 1.<\/p>\n
