{"id":25166,"date":"2011-07-19T16:00:29","date_gmt":"2011-07-19T20:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=25166"},"modified":"2011-07-19T16:00:29","modified_gmt":"2011-07-19T20:00:29","slug":"mlearning-developer-sees-new-education-possibilities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/mlearning-developer-sees-new-education-possibilities\/","title":{"rendered":"mLearning Developer Sees New Education Possibilities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Smarter smart phones and other PDAs, with their ready access to on-the-spot information, have inspired a new discipline and added yet another lower-case letter to the digital reference list: the <em>m<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>This <em>m,<\/em> shorthand for mobile, when associated with learning opens the doors for learning theorists to a whole new world of publishing possibilities.<\/p>\n<p>An extension of <em>e-learning,<\/em> that form of learning acquired by computer (compare to <em>c-learning<\/em> \u2014 classroom-learning, or<em> b-learning<\/em> \u2014 book-learning), <em>mLearning<\/em> is available on a device you have with you, wherever you happen to be.<\/p>\n<p>But, advocates argue, <em>mLearning<\/em>, at its best, is not merely c-learning via computer or a mini version of e-learning for PDA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>mLearning <\/em>is more about performance support \u2014 about referencing information specific to where you are and what you are doing,\u201d says David Metcalf, Ph.D., senior researcher at the University of Central Florida\u2019s Institute for Simulation &amp; Training and director of its Mixed Emerging Technology Integration Lab (METIL).<\/p>\n<p>A 15-year veteran of Web-based and mobile learning \u2014 practically a computer-age lifetime \u2014 Dr. Metcalf recently contributed to a new compilation of essays by respected learning professionals: <em>Michael Allen\u2019s 2012 e-Learning Annual<\/em> (Pfeiffer).<\/p>\n<p><em>mLearning<\/em>, according to Dr. Metcalf, is much larger than so-called formal (school) learning delivered to your PDA. A well-designed mLearning module provides interactive, just-in-time task- or location-related information at your fingertips.<\/p>\n<p>This kind of performance-oriented information, delivered by smart phone or PDA, differentiates <em>mLearning <\/em>from other computer-based learning applications.<\/p>\n<p>When, in 2006, Dr. Metcalf founded METIL, he brought together teams of instructional designers, software developers, graphic artists, project managers, editors and media experts to collaborate with \u201cinstructor experts\u201d\u2014experts who also have teaching experience in the subject matter\u2014 to build <em>mLearning <\/em>applications.<\/p>\n<p>It is the close collaboration between those who know the subject matter and those who know how to design and deliver applications to a mobile device that leads to effective <em>mLearning<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Metcalf notes that the most effective <em>mLearning <\/em>modules, unlike device-specific \u201capps,\u201d are designed to be available across the widest range of platforms. \u201cYou don\u2019t know what devices people have\u2014and what they have rapidly changes,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>METIL teams approach their various projects mindful that not all of their clients\u2019 audience have the latest smart phone or PDA.
