{"id":33700,"date":"2012-03-09T15:01:06","date_gmt":"2012-03-09T20:01:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=33700"},"modified":"2025-06-17T14:34:52","modified_gmt":"2025-06-17T18:34:52","slug":"no-clean-bill-of-health-for-u-s-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/no-clean-bill-of-health-for-u-s-economy\/","title":{"rendered":"No Clean Bill of Health for U.S. Economy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/20\/files\/2012\/03\/media-art-11.jpg\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium img-fluid wp-image-33703\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/20\/files\/2012\/03\/media-art-11-300x199.jpg\" alt><\/noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium img-fluid wp-image-33703 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" alt data-src=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/20\/files\/2012\/03\/media-art-11-300x199.jpg\"><\/a>There&#8217;s more to a healthy economy than the unemployment rate.<\/p>\n<p>Just like a good checkup that includes blood work, an eye test, hearing check and physical exam, the economy\u2019s health depends on more than just job numbers.<\/p>\n<p>And when we look at the whole picture, the prognosis for the national economy is still iffy, according to the latest U.S. economic forecast by Sean Snaith, the director of UCF\u2019s Institute for Economic Competitiveness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThink of it this way,\u201d Snaith said. \u201cIf your physician ordered you to have blood work and upon receiving the report looked only at your triglyceride levels to declare you 100 percent healthy, would you feel confident? No, there\u2019s more to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While some numbers are looking good \u2013&nbsp; the U.S. unemployment rate has declined for five straight months and stands at 8.3 percent \u2013 other indicators are not so promising.<\/p>\n<p>The rate of labor-force participation is still low. Unlike the unemployment rate, you want a high percentage because it means working-age people are engaged in the labor market. That number stands at 63.7 percent, down from 66 percent at the start of the latest recession. The rest have likely given up looking, discouraged by the lack of jobs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis troubling and continuing decline in the participation rate must stop if the labor market is to be considered in good health,\u201d Snaith said.<\/p>\n<p>Then there\u2019s spiking energy prices \u2013 again. Gasoline is nearing $4 a gallon with some analysts predicting it may reach $5.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rising price of oil and gasoline are a clear and present danger to consumer spending,\u201d Snaith said.<\/p>\n<p>He also criticizes the federal government for delaying action to address energy dependency on foreign sources until after the November presidential elections.<\/p>\n<p>And the national debt remains a problem with no real fix in sight. Until there are<strong> <\/strong>significant reforms to programs such as Social Security and Medicare there can be no clean bill of health for our economy, Snaith said.<\/p>\n<p>For Snaith\u2019s full forecast, click here.<\/p>\n<p>Snaith is a national expert in economics, forecasting, market sizing and economic analysis who authors quarterly reports about the state of the economy.
