The University of Central Florida and Daytona State College celebrated the grand opening of an expanded writing center at the Daytona Beach facility this week.<\/p>\n
About 8,000 students, faculty and staff seeking assistance with their writing have visited the Daytona State College Writing Center, which opened in October 2010.<\/p>\n
Last year, Daytona State partnered with UCF and received a $1 million grant from the State of Florida to expand the writing center into a joint-use facility open to students, faculty and staff from both institutions.<\/p>\n
The grant covered the cost of renovating the 1,198-square-foot facility, as well as staffing and equipment.<\/p>\n
Daytona State President Carol W. Eaton and UCF President John C. Hitt attended the ribbon-cutting celebration, which recognized the partnership and introduced the community to the facility\u2019s new name: the DSC-UCF Writing Center<\/p>\n
Sen. Evelyn Lynn and Daytona State District Board of Trustees Chairman Dwight D. Lewis also were in attendance in addition to a host of other officials. Tours were held after the ceremony.<\/p>\n
The facility is near the Mary Karl Learning Resource Center on the campus, 1200 W. International Speedway Blvd.<\/p>\n
The writing center provides one-on-one\u00a0and small-group tutoring sessions for those interested in improving their writing skills, whether it be for a research paper, essay, business letter, job application cover letter, or even a poem or story for a creative-writing or literature class. The center also features a number of writing-assistance tools, such as an interactive projector system and IdeaPaint, a mark-up system that helps writers track ideas, capture action steps and bring order to the creative process.<\/p>\n
