{"id":37168,"date":"2012-06-01T15:58:08","date_gmt":"2012-06-01T19:58:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=37168"},"modified":"2019-03-31T15:13:55","modified_gmt":"2019-03-31T19:13:55","slug":"ucf-awarded-for-technoethics-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/ucf-awarded-for-technoethics-research\/","title":{"rendered":"UCF Awarded for Technoethics Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Jeffrey Reiss, an applications systems analyst for the Registrar\u2019s Office, and Dr. Rosa Cintr\u00f3n, an assistant professor in the College of Education, are winners of the fifth annual InfoSci-Journals Excellence in Research Award for their paper \u201cCollege Students, Piracy, and Ethics: Is there a Teachable Moment?\u201d\u00a0 The paper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.igi-global.com\/article\/college-students-piracy-ethics\/58325\">was published<\/a> in the International Journal of Technoethics.<\/p>\n<p>The awards program, sponsored by IGI Global,\u00a0 recognizes the most outstanding articles from the publishing company&#8217;s journal collection for 2011. Winners were selected based on their contributions to the field; quality of writing; and originality, practicality and rigor of research.<\/p>\n<p>Reiss and Cintr\u00f3n&#8217;s paper focuses on piracy prevention tools utilized by the information technology staffs at Florida universities. Some universities use software to monitor illegal online media sharing, but it isn\u2019t always effective and can hinder the ability of students to freely browse the Internet. \u00a0The paper looks at alternative ways to discourage piracy in higher education.<\/p>\n<p>Reiss began his research as a doctoral student in UCF\u2019s Higher Educational Leadership program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe article is based on a component of my dissertation that focused on student ethics in the digital age,\u201d he said. \u201cI decided to pursue the topic of digital piracy in the university because of changes to the Higher Education Act that requires institutions to implement some form of monitoring in order to continue receiving funding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reiss said that while there is a lot of research on students and piracy, few projects explore the subjects together from an ethical perspective.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBesides offering a welcome change to the traditional solution to the piracy problem, I feel this research can spark further exploration in the field and help change policies for the better.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Dr. Jeffrey Reiss, an applications systems analyst for the Registrar\u2019s Office, and Dr. Rosa Cintr\u00f3n, an assistant professor in the College of Education, are winners of the fifth annual InfoSci-Journals Excellence in Research Award for their paper \u201cCollege Students, Piracy, and Ethics: Is there a Teachable Moment?\u201d\u00a0 The paper was published in the International Journal of Technoethics.
