Florida may be known as the Sunshine State, but hurricanes, tornadoes, lightning and other dangerous weather are also a reality here.<\/p>\n

To prepare people before a weather emergency occurs, the UCF Office of Emergency Management and the Emergency Management Student Association have developed safety information in honor of Severe Weather Awareness Week, which Florida will observe Feb. 11-15. The week\u2019s activities are a joint effort with the National Weather Service and Florida Department of Emergency Management, and the American Red Cross.<\/p>\n

Each state is assigned a different week of the year to highlight important safety tips for severe weather in their area. Each day of the week represents a different weather hazard, and the hazards for Florida include:<\/p>\n

Monday:<\/strong> Lightning<\/p>\n

Tuesday:<\/strong> Marine Hazards and Rip Currents<\/p>\n

Wednesday:<\/strong> Tornadoes and Thunderstorms<\/p>\n

Thursday:<\/strong> Hurricanes and Flooding<\/p>\n

Friday:<\/strong> Temperature Extremes and Wildfires<\/p>\n

Information about severe-weather preparedness and tips for staying safe during weather emergencies can be found at www.emergency.ucf.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Office of Emergency Management also will host a campus resiliency event, KNIGHTSHARE, March 25-29 to further assist with preparing for, responding to and recovering from severe-weather events and other emergencies.
