{"id":48222,"date":"2013-04-22T10:52:33","date_gmt":"2013-04-22T14:52:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=48222"},"modified":"2018-07-02T10:16:55","modified_gmt":"2018-07-02T14:16:55","slug":"knight-thon-raises-258554-17-for-childrens-miracle-network","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/knight-thon-raises-258554-17-for-childrens-miracle-network\/","title":{"rendered":"Knight-Thon Raises $258,554 for Children&#8217;s Miracle Network"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UCF\u2019s largest student-run philanthropy raised more than a quarter of a million dollars for the children of Children\u2019s Miracle Network hospitals, which support children\u2019s hospitals and medical research and community awareness of children\u2019s health issues.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 800 students participated in this year\u2019s dance marathon, which asks participants to stand for 18 hours to \u201cdance for the kids who can\u2019t\u201d and to raise funds for the Children\u2019s Miracle Network. Hundreds of students from more than 60 organizations raise funds for the event year-round, and the effort culminated Saturday with the dance marathon, which was held at the Venue and raised $258,554.17.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have worked so diligently to make Knight-Thon have a real presence on campus, and I think that this year, we finally made it,\u201d said Valerie Greco, Knight-Thon\u2019s fundraising chair. \u00a0\u201cOur goal of $170,000 seemed like a stretch and at times, there were set-backs and people said that we couldn\u2019t do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Knight-Thon raised $118,000 for Children\u2019s Miracle Network last year. This year, the philanthropy beat its goal thanks in part to a few large donations, including a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/orlando-magics-j-j-redick-donates-25000-to-ucf-knight-thon\/\">$25,000 gift from former Orlando Magic guard J.J. Redick<\/a>, who selected Knight-Thon as a winner of a social media contest to find a local charity to donate to.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn Sunday morning, I think many of the members of the executive board expected that we would exceed our goal, but no one was prepared for the reveal of over a quarter of a million dollars,\u201d Greco said. \u201cUCF raised $258,554.17, and I cannot think of a better cause than the Greater Orlando Children\u2019s Miracle Network!
