{"id":56932,"date":"2014-01-27T12:55:09","date_gmt":"2014-01-27T17:55:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=56932"},"modified":"2018-06-29T16:23:53","modified_gmt":"2018-06-29T20:23:53","slug":"advancing-safety-color-changing-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/advancing-safety-color-changing-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"Advancing Safety Through Color Changing Technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An intelligent tape that changes color in the presence of hydrogen has been licensed by UCF to a faculty-led spinoff company.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"HySense Technology LLC\" href=\"http:\/\/hysensetechnology.com\/\">HySense Technology,<\/a> LLC of Rockledge, FL, licensed the technology that was co-developed by its founder, Nahid Mohajeri, a researcher at <a title=\"FSEC Research\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fsec.ucf.edu\/en\/\">UCF\u2019s Florida Solar Energy Center<\/a>.\u00a0 She co-developed the technology to detect hydrogen leaks wherever hydrogen is produced, stored or transported.\u00a0 Early detection of the highly flammable, invisible gas can prevent dangerous explosions and casualties. The technology was developed as part of a larger $20M grant awarded to UCF from NASA\u2019s Kennedy Space Center for hydrogen research.<\/p>\n<p>The specialty tape uses proprietary color changing pigments, Intellipigment&#x2122;, to alert users to the exact location of a hydrogen leak. It can be wrapped around pipe fittings, flanges, valves, and storage and transportation vessels. \u00a0Color change occurs in a matter of seconds when hydrogen is detected and in concentrations as low as 1% hydrogen.<\/p>\n<p>HySense\u2019s Intellipigment&#x2122; tape has been tested and evaluated by chemical manufacturers and hydro-electric and nuclear power plants.
