{"id":59490,"date":"2014-05-14T11:34:03","date_gmt":"2014-05-14T15:34:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=59490"},"modified":"2014-05-21T12:40:15","modified_gmt":"2014-05-21T16:40:15","slug":"dentists-screen-oral-cancer-relay-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/dentists-screen-oral-cancer-relay-event\/","title":{"rendered":"Dentists Screen for Oral Cancer at Relay Event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At this year\u2019s Relay for Life event held on March 22, two dentists from UCF Health Services volunteered to screen participants for oral cancer, in addition to other dentists from the Dental Society of Greater Orlando.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRelay for Life is a great event because it does not focus on only one type of cancer,\u201d said Gary Lease, Health Services lead dentist. \u201cDentists are in a unique position to identify cancer of the head and neck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Screening for oral cancer is fairly easy for the trained eye and hand. Clients probably do not even notice the dentist conducting an oral cancer screening at their regular check-ups, but they always do; hence the importance of regular dental check-ups.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOral health is an important part of a healthy life,\u201d said Aisha Manon, Health Services dentist. \u201cPeople are not sufficiently aware of the threat of oral cancer. The event was a great way to show our commitment to oral cancer awareness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Health Services is a department in the Division of Student Development and Enrollment
