As new and returning Knights start Summer B classes this week, the UCF Police Department reminds them to prioritize safety, just as students prioritize academics, extracurricular activities and socializing with friends.<\/p>\n
UCF police officers patrol campus 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with a focus on student safety and crime prevention.<\/p>\n
In addition to patrolling campus, the police department offers a variety of free or low-cost services to help students protect themselves and their property.<\/p>\n
Laptops, tablets, bicycles, skateboards and other valuables can be engraved for free as part of the nationally recognized Operation ID program. In the event an item is missing or stolen, UCF Police and other law enforcement agencies can use the driver\u2019s license number engraved on the item to track it down and return it to its rightful owner.<\/p>\n
\u201cStudents would be amazed at how many items are turned in or found by the police department,\u201d said Ofc. Pete Stephens. \u201cWithout a serial number or driver\u2019s license number, your cell phone or computer looks like everyone else\u2019s, especially when the criminal wipes all your personal data. Engraving your items is free, and it helps us put lost or stolen valuables back in your hands.\u201d<\/p>\n
Stephens said he\u2019s even engraved hair straighteners and an expensive set of knives that belong to a student at the Rosen College for Hospitality Management.<\/p>\n
Students also can register other property information, including an item\u2019s make, model and serial number, with UCF Police. All of the registration information is available only to law enforcement agencies.<\/p>\n
UCF Police also offers monthly self-defense classes for women, including students, faculty staff and members of the public. The courses cost $5, and they provide women with safety tips and basic tactics to protect themselves in the event of an attack.<\/p>\n
Upcoming classes will be 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, and Wednesday, July 23, at the UCF Police Department. Registration is available at https:\/\/police.ucf.edu\/womens-self-defense.<\/p>\n
Students, faculty and staff on campus at night are encouraged to use the free Safe Escort Patrol Service, which runs Monday through Friday from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. Those looking for an escort to a campus location after 1 a.m. or on weekends can call 407-823-5555, and an officer will be dispatched if one is available.<\/p>\n
Students who have been impacted by crimes can consult with UCF Victim Services for free confidential crisis counseling and support services. Advocates are available 24\/7 at 407-823-1200 and during regular walk-in hours (8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) Monday through Friday at locations in Research Park and the John T. Washington Center.<\/p>\n
