If you didn\u2019t know any better, you\u2019d think the dog was smiling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s so soft,\u201d said the 6-year-old from her bed at Nemours Children\u2019s Hospital in Orlando. \u201cI love him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ion is a certified therapy dog. His owner, UCF second-year-medical student Christa Zino, brings him to the hospital most Friday evenings to visit sick children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo see their faces light up is priceless,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the rigors and \u201ccraziness\u201d of medical school, Zino finds time to visit each week \u2013 even during final exams this month \u2013 because she remembers what it was like to be in the hospital for months at a time. When she was about 3 years old, Zino spent a better part of the year in and out of hospitals while doctors tried to figure out what was making the Apopka native sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only thing I remember with fondness about that year is the therapy dog visits,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd so I wanted to do something for children now, before I become a doctor and can help in other ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The visits remind Zino why the 18-hour days of school and studying are all worth it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I think it is too much and that I can\u2019t handle everything, this reminds me that I have no problems and why I want to be a pediatric surgeon,\u201d said the 27-year-old. \u201cI want to help children like the ones I see every week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Faculty at the UCF College of Medicine applaud Zino\u2019s efforts, and there\u2019s even a bonus for the school.<\/p>\n<p>When Ion isn\u2019t visiting children at Nemours or chasing his Chihuahua roommate at home, he\u2019s lounging in the college\u2019s Student Academic Support Services office.<br>\nThat\u2019s where he keeps office hours two days a week for stressed out medical students to stop by for doggy rubs or kisses before heading to their next class.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/20\/files\/2015\/12\/ion3.jpg\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"680\" class=\"mx-auto d-block img-fluid wp-image-69952\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/20\/files\/2015\/12\/ion3.jpg\" alt=\"Ion during his &quot;office hours&quot; at the UCF College of Medicine\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/20\/files\/2015\/12\/ion3.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/20\/files\/2015\/12\/ion3-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/20\/files\/2015\/12\/ion3-768x510.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/20\/files\/2015\/12\/ion3-602x400.jpg 602w, https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/20\/files\/2015\/12\/ion3-360x239.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"><\/noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"680\" class=\"mx-auto d-block img-fluid wp-image-69952 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%22%20viewBox%3D%220%200%201024%20680%22%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" alt=\"Ion during his &quot;office hours&quot; at the UCF College of Medicine\" srcset=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%22%20viewBox%3D%220%200%201024%20680%22%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/20\/files\/2015\/12\/ion3.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/20\/files\/2015\/12\/ion3-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/20\/files\/2015\/12\/ion3-768x510.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/20\/files\/2015\/12\/ion3-602x400.jpg 602w, https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/20\/files\/2015\/12\/ion3-360x239.jpg 360w\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/20\/files\/2015\/12\/ion3.jpg\"><\/a><em>Ion during his &#8220;office hours&#8221; at the UCF College of Medicine<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For parents of children who spend extended time at Nemours for treatment of some of the most challenging conditions, the therapy dog visits are \u201cmagical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe loves it when they visit,\u201d said Katherine Vorkapich, Palmer\u2019s mother, of Ion and the other 29 therapy animals registered to volunteer at Nemours.<\/p>\n<p>Palmer is being treated for acute myeloid leukemia, also known as AML. The condition requires hospital stays of about a month after each session over a six-month stretch. The kindergartner and her family will be spending Christmas in the hospital this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe just lights up,\u201d Vorkapich said. \u201cIt\u2019s a great change in the day. A lot of times, she doesn\u2019t have visitors, so it is awesome they come in to see her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nurses will stop Zino in the hallway and ask her to visit a patient\u2019s room to help lift spirits, ease some stress before a procedure or simply hang out to help kick the blues that often hit when children are away from their homes.<\/p>\n<p>Patients can also request a pet visit by tapping a button in the control console in their room. The console triggers an icon on the computer screen outside their room. As pet therapy handlers walk the halls, they know where to pop in for a visit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my nine years at Nemours, I have seen over and over how our pet therapy dogs have a very special way of making children less anxious and often produce some smiles and giggles,\u201d said Jill Mondry, director of volunteer services at Nemours. \u201cThey truly are important members of our care team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ion seems to enjoy his job too. It\u2019s a far cry from what destiny had originally planned for the pup, who Zino got from a rescue organization after he was turned over from someone out-of-state for not being aggressive enough to fight.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s obvious that Ion is a lover, not a fighter, Zino said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe gets so excited when his vest comes out.
