The second annual Be My Neighbor Day returns to Winter Park on Sunday, Feb. 28 bringing with it fun and educational activities for the whole family.<\/p>\n
The free event, hosted by WUCF TV and the Winter Park History Museum runs from noon to 3 p.m. at Winter Park\u2019s Central Park. Children will have the chance to participate in family-friendly activities themed around being a good neighbor. The Winter Park History Museum will provide educational panels on the life and legacy of the late Fred Rogers.<\/p>\n
Guests will also have an opportunity to meet Daniel Tiger, star of the PBS KIDS program, Daniel Tiger\u2019s Neighborhood.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe had such an amazing turnout last year for Be My Neighbor Day and look forward to once again engaging with the Central Florida community,\u201d said Catherine Hiles, WUCF TV\u2019s education and community engagement manager. \u201cWe are proud to be able to bring a fun and informative event with so many teachable moments for families.\u201d<\/p>\n
Vice Mayor Sarah Sprinkel will help open the event by dedicating Feb. 28th as Be My Neighbor Day in Winter Park with an official proclamation from the city.<\/p>\n
Daniel Tiger\u2019s Neighborhood is one of PBS\u2019 most popular animated programs, which builds on the pioneering PBS series, Mister Rogers\u2019 Neighborhood, and is produced by The Fred Rogers Company. This series for a new generation of children tells its engaging stories about the life of a preschooler using musical strategies grounded in Rogers\u2019 landmark social-emotional curriculum. Through imagination, creativity and music, Daniel and his friends learn the key social skills necessary for school and life.<\/p>\n
Not only is Rogers one of the world\u2019s most beloved stars, he\u2019s one of Winter Park\u2019s most famous former residents. \u00a0Rogers earned his bachelor’s degree in music composition at Rollins College in 1951 and immediately was hired in the television industry. Rogers married Joanne Byrd, a concert pianist and fellow Rollins graduate in 1952.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are so happy to be celebrating the legacy of Fred Rogers once again in Winter Park\u2019s beautiful Central Park,\u201d said Susan Skolfield, executive director of the Winter Park History Museum. \u201cIt\u2019s so important to remember his positive impact on our community and nation.\u201d<\/p>\n
Rogers died in 2003, but his legacy – teaching millions of children how to be good neighbors, play make-believe and appreciate music – lives on through Daniel Tiger\u2019s Neighborhood, which airs daily on WUCF TV at 9 a.m.<\/p>\n
