There were plenty of smiles to go around at the\u00a08th Annual Reach for the Stars Scholarship Dinner\u00a0hosted\u00a0by the College of Health and Public Affairs.<\/p>\n

\n

Donors to scholarships in the college met\u00a0the latest beneficiaries of their\u00a0generosity\u00a0\u2014 the 2015-16 scholarship recipients\u00a0\u2014 during\u00a0an\u00a0elegant reception, dinner\u00a0and ceremony held\u00a0April 7\u00a0at the\u00a0FAIRWINDS<\/em> Alumni Center.<\/p>\n

It\u00a0was both a joyous and\u00a0moving experience for many.<\/p>\n

The event provided speaker Paul Lewis with an opportunity to share memories of his esteemed colleague and friend Kevin Tyjeski, for\u00a0whom he helped establish The Kevin Tyjeski City Planning Endowed Scholarship. Lewis, the chief planning manager for Orlando,\u00a0also had the opportunity to meet this year’s recipient of the scholarship, Hector Guerrero, a graduate student in urban and regional planning.<\/p>\n

Speaker Kamillia Crawford, a recipient of three\u00a0of the college’s\u00a0scholarships this year,\u00a0talked about\u00a0the impact of scholarships during her college studies. “[They] alleviated a heavy burden that enabled me to focus on my academic, leadership and career goals,” said Crawford, who will graduate in May with a degree in legal studies.<\/p>\n

Crawford enjoyed dinner with\u00a0the donor of one of the scholarships she received,\u00a0retired Associate Dean Pamela Kirby,\u00a0who established the Robert and Pamela Kirby Endowed Scholarship in memory of her husband.<\/p>\n

Twenty-five years ago, when the college was established, there were no college-based scholarships to award; however,\u00a0since then many donors have established and contributed to scholarship funds in the college,\u00a0shared Dean Michael Frumkin.<\/p>\n

“As of today, the college has awarded 432 scholarships, bringing the total amount of dollars awarded to nearly $500,000,”\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n

“Scholarship gifts help the college attract and retain the best students,” Frumkin told the guests. “They also lessen the financial burden so academic pursuits can take priority. Thank you to each and every one of you in the room who has made an investment in our students.”<\/p>\n
