{"id":74471,"date":"2016-10-17T10:08:17","date_gmt":"2016-10-17T14:08:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=74471"},"modified":"2018-06-28T16:27:45","modified_gmt":"2018-06-28T20:27:45","slug":"ucf-scientist-creates-efficient-quantum-cascade-laser-ever","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/ucf-scientist-creates-efficient-quantum-cascade-laser-ever\/","title":{"rendered":"UCF Scientist Creates Most Efficient Quantum Cascade Laser Ever"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A team of UCF researchers has produced the most efficient quantum cascade laser ever designed \u2013 and done it in a way that makes the lasers easier to manufacture.<\/p>\n<p>Quantum cascade lasers, or QCLs, are tiny \u2013 smaller than a grain of rice \u2013 but they pack a punch. Compared to traditional lasers, QCLs offer higher power output and can be tuned to a wide range of infrared wavelengths. They can also be used at room temperature without the need for bulky cooling systems.<\/p>\n<p>But because they\u2019re difficult and costly to produce, QCLs aren\u2019t used much outside the Department of Defense.<\/p>\n<p>A University of Central Florida team led by Assistant Professor Arkadiy Lyakh has developed a simpler process for creating such lasers, with comparable performance and better efficiency. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scitation.org\/action\/cookieAbsent\">results were published recently<\/a> in the scientific journal Applied Physics Letters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe previous record was achieved using a design that\u2019s a little exotic, that\u2019s somewhat difficult to reproduce in real life,\u201d Lyakh said. \u201cWe improved on that record, but what\u2019s really important is that we did it in such a way that it\u2019s easier to transition this technology to production. From a practical standpoint, it\u2019s an important result.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That could lead to greater usage in spectroscopy, such as using the infrared lasers as remote sensors to detect gases and toxins in the atmosphere. Lyakh, who has joint appointments with UCF\u2019s NanoScience Technology Center and the College of Optics and Photonics, envisions portable health devices. For instance, a small QCL-embedded device could be plugged into a smartphone and used to diagnose health problems by simply analyzing one\u2019s exhaled breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut for a handheld device, it has to be as efficient as possible so it doesn\u2019t drain your battery and it won\u2019t generate a lot of heat,\u201d Lyakh said.<\/p>\n<p>The method that previously produced the highest efficiency called for the QCL atop a substrate made up of more than 1,000 layers, each one barely thicker than a single atom. Each layer was composed of one of five different materials, making production challenging.<\/p>\n<p>The new method developed at UCF uses only two different materials \u2013 a simpler design from a production standpoint.<\/p>\n<p>Lyakh came to UCF in September 2015 from Pranalytic, Inc., a California-based tech company, where he led QCL development and production.
