{"id":80723,"date":"2018-02-05T15:36:53","date_gmt":"2018-02-05T20:36:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=80723"},"modified":"2019-12-18T16:06:43","modified_gmt":"2019-12-18T21:06:43","slug":"high-performance-goals-may-encourage-cheating-work-place-ethics-not-emphasized","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/high-performance-goals-may-encourage-cheating-work-place-ethics-not-emphasized\/","title":{"rendered":"Study: Employers Should Push Ethics to Offset Stress of High Demands in Workplace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Businesses looking to stay out of headlines for cheating and other unethical behavior may want to push for ethical standards within their institutions.<\/p>\n<p>Demanding high performance by employees without emphasizing the need to follow a code of ethics encourages cheating in the workplace, according to a study led by professors from the University of Central Florida, University of Georgia, Arizona State University, and University of Nebraska-Kearney.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAssuring employees that their supervisors will reward hard work\u2014not cheating\u2014may dissuade workers from breaking the rules to get ahead,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/business.ucf.edu\/person\/maureen-ambrose\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maureen L. Ambrose<\/a>, professor of business ethics at UCF\u2019s College of Business.<\/p>\n<p>Ambrose and colleague Robert Folger partnered with researchers from the other universities to publish their findings in the <em>Journal of Applied Psychology<\/em> in December.<\/p>\n<p><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" img-fluid wp-image-80725 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/20\/files\/2018\/02\/Folger_UCFB_0074-e1517862949172-255x300.jpg\" alt=\"Robert Folger\"><\/noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" img-fluid wp-image-80725 size-medium lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" alt=\"Robert Folger\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/20\/files\/2018\/02\/Folger_UCFB_0074-e1517862949172-255x300.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>The study said \u201cas organizations place a strong emphasis on high levels of performance, they may also enhance employees\u2019 self-interested motives and need for self-protection. \u2026 Employees [then] experience anger and heightened self-serving cognitions, which motivate cheating behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On other words, if performance demands are too high, employees may feel like they need to do anything to meet goals so they don\u2019t lose their jobs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmployers need to be thoughtful about the goals they set for employees and how these goals are presented and managed,\u201d Ambrose said. \u201cHigh performance standards have benefits, but our work suggests the standards must be challenging, not threatening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To read more about the study click here: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/2017-34937-001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cheating Under Pressure: A Self-Protection Model of Workplace Cheating Behavior.<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Businesses looking to stay out of headlines for cheating and other unethical behavior may want to push for ethical standards within their institutions.
