The Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico is celebrating its 55th\u00a0birthday this month with a host of special activities that demonstrate the impact the work conducted at the National Science Foundation-funded facility has on our daily lives.<\/p>\n

Hands-on workshops, guest speakers and special online opportunities are scheduled from Oct. 28 to Nov. 3 at the observatory.<\/p>\n

Among the speakers scheduled:<\/p>\n

  • Jill Tarter, the radio astronomer behind Jodie Foster\u2019s character in the movie Contact, filmed in part at Arecibo<\/li>\n
  • Jan Millsapp, a San Francisco-based filmmaker and director of Madame Mars<\/em><\/li>\n

    Some of the researchers who live and work at Arecibo will also present about the work they do and why it matters. Each day is themed to show how the work at Arecibo is impacting different fields.<\/p>\n

    Oct. 30: Engineering<\/p>\n

    Oct. 31: Planetary Radar<\/p>\n

    Nov. 1: Exoplanets<\/p>\n

    Nov. 2: Space and Atmospheric Studies<\/p>\n

    Nov. 3: Madame Mars<\/em> movie screening and Women in Space Panel Discussion<\/p>\n

    \u201cIt\u2019s been quite the year, with Hurricane Maria and the challenges it brought,\u201d said Francisco Corodova, the observatory\u2019s director. \u201cBut we\u2019ve recovered and 2018 has been a year of opportunities with new management coming online and new programs launching. The best is yet to come.\u201d<\/p>\n

    UCF is also hosting a scientist from Arecibo<\/a> on the main campus on Monday, Oct. 29. Kristin Jones, who researches massive black holes and the galaxies they call home, will be talking to the UCF community during her visit.<\/p>\n

    The observatory is now under the leadership of UCF, with the collaboration of the Universidad Metropolitana (UMET) and Yang Enterprises Inc. The team has been leading Arecibo since April 2018.<\/p>\n
