{"id":93139,"date":"2018-12-14T13:45:13","date_gmt":"2018-12-14T18:45:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=93139"},"modified":"2021-01-07T16:07:59","modified_gmt":"2021-01-07T21:07:59","slug":"bowl-game-supports-ucf-breast-cancer-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/bowl-game-supports-ucf-breast-cancer-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Bowl Game Supports UCF Breast Cancer Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Saturday\u2019s AutoNation Cure Bowl has raised $3.55 million for breast cancer research in the last three years \u2013 with over $1.1 million going to College of Medicine researcher Dr. Annette Khaled.<\/p>\n<p>And at a pre-game press conference Dec. 15, Khaled and football players from Tulane University and Louisiana-Lafayette talked about the impact of breast cancer, which will kill more than 40,000 Americans this year.<\/p>\n<p>Zachery Harris, linebacker for Tulane, said his grandmother died from breast cancer a year ago. &nbsp;\u201cSo it\u2019s very dear to me,\u201d he told reporters about playing in the Cure Bowl. \u201cJust to be playing for that cause means a whole lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"184\" class=\"float-left size-medium img-fluid wp-image-93140\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/20\/files\/2018\/12\/khaled1-300x184-300x184.jpg\" alt><\/noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"184\" class=\"float-left size-medium img-fluid wp-image-93140 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%22%20viewBox%3D%220%200%20300%20184%22%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" alt data-src=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/20\/files\/2018\/12\/khaled1-300x184-300x184.jpg\">The annual NCAA bowl game in Orlando raises money for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF), the largest private funder of breast cancer research worldwide. One of the game\u2019s largest beneficiaries is Khaled,.&nbsp; \u201cThe work that we\u2019re doing right now at UCF is really mostly due to the Cure Bowl\u2019s endeavors,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>In 2012, Khaled discovered a peptide called CT20 that kills metastatic cancer cells. The peptide disrupts chaperonin, a protein that prompts the folding mechanism inside cancer cells. If the inner workings of the cell can\u2019t fold into 3D units, the cell dies. She and her team developed a technology using nanoparticles that are programmed to carry the peptide through the bloodstream to attack metastatic cancer cells. And recently, her lab has been working with \u201cliquid biopsies,\u201d which can analyze spreading cancer cells in patients\u2019 blood to help identify those whose tumor makeup would most benefit from their therapy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people are developing therapies for all different types of cancer, including breast cancer,\u201d Khaled says. \u201cBut the challenge comes when you try to use that therapy in patients. Which patients will benefit? Which therapy should you use on which patient? So being able to develop a diagnostic arm that runs in parallel to our therapy is really powerful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Khaled said the Cure Bowl funding and support from BCRF have accelerated her work to find a cure while helping raise public awareness about her research. &nbsp;\u201cWe\u2019re moving forward,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>The Cure Bowl begins at 1:30 p.m. at Camping World Stadium.
