As a UCF medical student, Michael Metzner ’16MD<\/strong> lived his belief that art plays a major role in healing. Today, as a surgeon, he\u2019s taking that passion to prime time as medical advisor for ABC\u2019s hit drama Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Linda Klein, the show\u2019s co-executive producer, calls Metzner \u201cthe best thing that has happened to Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em> in a long time.\u201d And its lead actress, Ellen Pompeo, praises the young physician\u2019s collaborative spirit, work ethic and his \u201cintense passion to heal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Metzner\u2019s role is to ensure that what happens on the television drama is medically accurate \u2014 that diagnoses, surgical procedures, symptoms and dialogue are based on real science. He\u2019s helped write scripts and has even appeared as an extra.<\/p>\n

\u201cI tell people I\u2019m the biggest method actor they\u2019ll ever meet,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Finding His Way to Seattle Grace<\/h2>\n

Metzner graduated from the UCF College of Medicine<\/a> in 2016. During his tenure at UCF, he led the Arts in Medicine student group, produced a multi-act musical for the college\u2019s holiday showcase, and secured a donated piano for Nemours Children\u2019s Hospital that he played for patients and their families. He matched into a surgical residency at University of Texas Health San Antonio and was in his second year of training when his residency director learned that Grey\u2019s<\/em> was seeking a physician to serve as a Medical Communications Fellow. Daniel Dent immediately thought of Metzner, who spent time as a concert pianist, painter, photographer and stage performer before attending medical school.<\/p>\n

“Through the medium of television, Michael has found a way to reach far more people than one can reach by publishing in a medical journal.” \u2014 Daniel Dent, professor and director of UT Health San Antonio\u2019s general surgery program<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cOur program is very supportive of physicians being involved in the arts,\u201d says Dent, who leads UT Health San Antonio\u2019s general surgery program and notes that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle \u2014 who penned “Sherlock Holmes” \u2014 was a physician. \u201cMany of us work to improve healthcare and educate the public, but through the medium of television, Michael has found a way to reach far more people than one can reach by publishing in a medical journal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Metzner is living in Los Angeles and will have about two years on the show as part of UT\u2019s research curriculum for residents. A typical day starts on the set around 7 a.m. with rehearsals. On a recent day, actors, producers and Metzner went through a scene in which physicians were performing laparoscopic surgery. The director wanted to know: \u201cAre the actor\u2019s hands in the right place for such a procedure?\u201d \u201cIs the patient situated correctly on the operating room table?\u201d \u201cAre the nurses and the anesthesiologist doing the right things?\u201d<\/p>\n

Moments later, Metzner was running to the writer\u2019s room to be sure that an upcoming script\u2019s medical terms were accurate. Hours after that, in post-production, Metzner worked with editors to be sure their changes weren\u2019t making the scene medically inaccurate.<\/p>\n

He can\u2019t talk about future episodes but for a past show, the writers came up with a theme of \u201cuntethered\u201d and asked Metzner to come up with an appropriately themed medical condition. He did \u2014 a wandering spleen. The episode featured a pregnant patient whose wandering spleen ruptured, requiring Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em> physicians to deliver the baby moments before the mother died.<\/p>\n

Combining Art and Surgery<\/h2>\n

\u201cI believe arts are a complement to any scientific study,\u201d Metzner says, \u201cwhich is why this experience resonates with me so much.\u201d He says helping to create a medical drama has also helped him process his experiences as a resident.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a surgical resident, I\u2019ve had plenty of traumatic cases,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd you don\u2019t have time to reflect when you\u2019re in the middle of them because all of your focus is on the emergency. Grey\u2019s <\/em>has given me the opportunity to process those experiences and see them as a bystander. It\u2019s been a cathartic experience that\u2019s helped me be more connected to the humanity of medicine.\u201d<\/p>\n

After residency and fellowship training, Metzner hopes to continue combining surgery with the arts \u2014 perhaps as a physician who also produces and writes pieces for television or film. If he combines art and medicine in Hollywood, he\u2019ll have plenty of well-known references on his resume.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know how I did this job the last 15 years without Michael,\u201d says Klein.<\/p>\n

“He cares deeply about doing his job to perfection, is a great listener, a great collaborator and an enthusiastic member of our team.\u201d \u2014\u00a0Ellen Pompeo, also known as Meredith Grey of\u00a0Grey’s Anatomy<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And Pompeo, who gives Metzner grief for the script\u2019s complicated medical terms she has to pronounce, says, \u201cMichael has been incredible to work with. He cares deeply about doing his job to perfection, is a great listener, a great collaborator and an enthusiastic member of our team.\u201d<\/p>\n

Deborah German, vice president for health affairs and dean of the College of Medicine, said she was proud of Metzner for following his dream.<\/p>\n
