Students can meet this expectation by purchasing or leasing a computer, sharing a computer with family or roommates, or using a UCF student computer lab. All UCF students should expect to use a personal computer in many university activities, including coursework, accessing library information, registering for classes,\u00a0and communicating with instructors and fellow students.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, many UCF courses require access to the internet. UCF has developed one of the nation&#8217;s most advanced campus technology environments, and all UCF students are provided with free email accounts and internet access. Students wishing to acquire a personal computer are strongly advised to consider a notebook computer with a wireless networking card.<\/p>\n<h2>What Do You Need to Have for An Online Course?<\/h2>\n<p>Specific hardware and software requirements vary by department and course, so check with your instructor. At a minimum, you will need the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Access to a computer\n<ul>\n<li><a rel=\"noindex nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/cstore.ucf.edu\" target=\"_blank\">UCF Computer Store recommendations<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"noindex nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/techcommons.ucf.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">UCF Computer Labs<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Internet access<\/li>\n<li>Web browser<\/li>\n<li>Word-processing software<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is important to prepare your computer to operate in the Webcourses@UCF environment. Please make the following adjustments to your computer:<\/p>\n<h3>Supported Operating Systems<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Windows 7 or newer<\/li>\n<li>Mac OS X or newer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Downloads<\/h3>\n<p>To ensure a successful online learning experience with your course, make sure you have the required downloads and plug-ins.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the most commonly used downloads and plug-ins include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a rel=\"noindex nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/get.adobe.com\/reader\/\">Adobe PDF Reader<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"noindex nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/get.adobe.com\/flashplayer\/\">Adobe Flash Player<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"noindex nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/getsilverlight\/Get-Started\/Install\/Default\">Microsoft Silverlight<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"noindex nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/downloads\/quicktime\">Quicktime Player<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"noindex nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.real.com\/\">RealPlayer<\/a>\u00a0or <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/help\/17777\/downloads-for-windows\" target=\"_blank\">Windows Media Player<\/a> (Windows 7 only)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Please review your course syllabus or contact your instructor for a list of any additional required plug-ins for your class.<\/p>\n<h3>Check Browser Settings<\/h3>\n<p>Webcourses@UCF is a platform that relies on your internet browser to display content. It is important that you configure your browser correctly so it will function properly with Webcourses@UCF, allowing you to fully benefit from the online experience.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make sure that you are using a <a rel=\"noindex nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/docs\/DOC-10720\" target=\"_blank\">supported browser<\/a> to access Webcourses@UCF (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari).<\/li>\n<li>Enable JavaScript in your browser.<\/li>\n<li>Enable Cookies for the Webcourses@UCF site.<\/li>\n<li>Enable pop-up windows for the Webcourses@UCF site.<\/li>\n<li>Add Webcourses@UCF as a trusted site.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Mixed Content<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cdl.ucf.edu\/support\/webcourses\/browser\/mixed-content\/\" target=\"_blank\">In Internet Explorer<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cdl.ucf.edu\/support\/webcourses\/browser\/mixed-content\/\" target=\"_blank\">In Firefox<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Trusted Sites<\/h3>\n<p>Occasionally, you may see a message indicating that Webcourses@UCF is not a trusted site. You can set your browser to make Webcourses@UCF a trusted site by following these instructions (instructions may vary depending on browser):<\/p>\n<div id=\"accordion\">\n<h4>Internet Explorer<\/h4>\n<div>\n<ol>\n<li>Open Internet Explorer.<\/li>\n<li>On the menu bar, select <strong>Tools<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Internet Options<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Select the <strong>Security<\/strong> tab at the top.<\/li>\n<li>Click the <strong>Trusted Sites<\/strong> icon.<\/li>\n<li>Then select the <strong>Sites<\/strong> button.<\/li>\n<li>Uncheck the box next to <strong>Require Server Verification\u2026<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In the <strong>Add this website to the Zone<\/strong> box, type <strong>https:\/\/webcourses.ucf.edu<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Add<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Close<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Then click<strong> OK<\/strong> to close the Internet Options window.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<h4>Firefox<\/h4>\n<div>\n<ol>\n<li>Open Firefox.<\/li>\n<li>Click the Firefox Menu and select <strong>Options<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Select the <strong>Security<\/strong> tab.<\/li>\n<li>In the first section click the <strong>Exceptions<\/strong> button.<\/li>\n<li>Type <strong>https:\/\/webcourses.ucf.edu<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Allow<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Close<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<h4>Chrome<\/h4>\n<div>\n<ol>\n<li>Click the Chrome Menu icon on the far right of the Address bar.<\/li>\n<li>Click on\u00a0<strong>Settings<\/strong>, scroll to the bottom and click the\u00a0<strong>Show Advanced Settings<\/strong>\u00a0link.<\/li>\n<li>Click on\u00a0<strong>Change Proxy Settings\u00a0<\/strong>(under\u00a0<strong>Network<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li>Click the\u00a0<strong>Security<\/strong>\u00a0tab &gt;\u00a0<strong>Trusted Sites<\/strong>\u00a0icon, then click\u00a0<strong>Sites<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Enter the URL of your Trusted Site, then click\u00a0<strong>Add<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<strong>Close &gt; OK<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<h4>Safari<\/h4>\n<div>Currently, Safari does not have an option to set permanent trusted sites. Whenever you visit Webcourses@UCF, be sure to click OK when asked whether or not Webcourses@UCF is a trusted site.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Pop-up blockers<\/h3>\n<p>Pop-up blockers can cause a variety of problems if not configured appropriately. For Webcourses@UCF to function properly, your browser must allow pop-up windows from the Webcourses@UCF server. If you cannot view a discussion posting, quiz or have difficulty opening links, read through the support page linked below and follow the instructions:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cdl.ucf.edu\/support\/webcourses\/browser\/popups\/\" target=\"_blank\">Troubleshooting Your Pop-Up Blocker Problems<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Cookies<\/h3>\n<p>Cookies are small pieces of data that are sent by a web server (in our case, the Webcourses@UCF server) to a browser. The browser sends that cookie back each time it accesses the server.<\/p>\n<p>Cookies are used by Webcourses@UCF for authentication purposes and must be enabled for your browser to access Webcourses@UCF. If cookies are not enabled, you may be improperly authenticated and could experience technical issues. At a minimum, session cookies must be enabled for access to\u00a0Webcourses@UCF.<\/p>\n<p>Problems resulting from cookies being disabled include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Inability to login<\/li>\n<li>Ending up on the wrong login screen<\/li>\n<li>Getting kicked out of Webcourses@UCF and having to login again<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Browser Checker will check for cookie problems and provide a link to information about enabling cookies.<\/p>\n<h3>Adware\/Spyware<\/h3>\n<p>If your browser is having problems displaying Webcourses@UCF, you may have an adware problem. Adware, advertising-supported software, automatically plays, displays or downloads advertising to a computer after the software is installed on it or while the application is being used.<\/p>\n<p>If you suspect that you have an adware problem, contact <a href=\"https:\/\/it.ucf.edu\" target=\"_blank\">UCF Service Desk<\/a> at <a href=\"tel:407-823-5117\">407-823-5117<\/a> or <a href=\"mailto:servicedesk@ucf.edu\">servicedesk@ucf.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"UCF Statement on Student Use of Technology The University of Central Florida expects all students to have ready access to a personal computer and software appropriate to his or her field of study.
