Its name is yaupon [pronounced yoh-pon], and while popular in the distant past, it became known more as an ornamental rather than a food source in the last century.[\/lead]<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-8\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mobile-img-fluid\" style=\"height: auto; max-width: 98%; width: 100%; margin-top: 0;\" title=\"a hand holding yaupon brothers fire roasted tea\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/pegasus\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/4\/files\/2019\/03\/Launchpad-Yaupon-gallery6-1200-x-800.jpg\" alt=\"a hand holding yaupon brothers fire roasted tea\" \/>That is, until brothers <strong>Bryon White \u201909\u00a0<\/strong>and Kyle, a senior majoring in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/event-management-bs\/\">event management<\/a>, decided to revive the ancient superfood and create a new product for 21st-century tea drinkers.<\/p>\n<p>Grown in the southeastern United States, yaupon holly was traded by Native Americans to make tea for ceremonies and recreation. During the Civil War, Southerners often drank yaupon tea in place of coffee and black tea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYaupon is such a great edible plant, and it deserves a spot in your cupboard,\u201d says Bryon, who earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/legal-studies-bs\/\">legal studies<\/a> at UCF.<\/p>\n<p>The Yaupon Brothers Tea Co. started in 2012, and a year later it became the first processor and grower of yaupon to earn USDA organic certification. The brothers project that the ongoing trend toward natural foods and herbal teas will boost sales in the coming years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got a lot of happy customers,\u201d Bryon says. \u201cSome of them appreciate the novelty of the product, and some just like the way it tastes and that it\u2019s grown right here in Florida.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The brothers have a 12-acre farm in New Smyrna Beach, several land leases throughout the state, a production facility in Edgewater, and they helped start the American Yaupon Association with nine other new companies to promote yaupon.<\/p>\n<p>They also promote yaupon business opportunities to farmers, especially citrus growers whose crops have been hit by harsh weather and disease the past several years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith yaupon being native, it does not need any fertilizer or pesticides and requires very little water,\u201d Kyle says. \u201cThis leads to a crop that is more profitable for farmers while leaving less environmental impact on its surrounding area.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>[blockquote source=&#8221;Kyle White&#8221; cite=&#8221;&#8221; color=&#8221;&#8221; css_class=&#8221;&#8221;]\u201cTo us, it\u2019s a no-brainer.
