Cole<\/em><\/p>\n<p>[sidebar background=&#8221;#eeeeee&#8221; position=&#8221;right&#8221; content_align=&#8221;left&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"archer-bold-italic gotham-bold\">Current Role:<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"gotham-book\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Chair, UCF Board of Trustees<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"archer-bold-italic gotham-bold\">Previous Role:<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"gotham-book\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Modeling and simulation executive<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"archer-bold-italic gotham-bold\">Passions:<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"gotham-book\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Computing, higher education, women\u00a0in STEM, her grandchildren<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"archer-bold-italic gotham-bold\">UCF Connections:<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"gotham-book\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Daughters <strong>Tiffany (Kitaoka)\u00a0Kaminski \u201906 \u201911MS<\/strong> and <strong>Michelle\u00a0(Kitaoka) Nicol \u201918MS<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"gotham-book\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Served on the UCF Board of Trustees, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cecs.ucf.edu\/about-us\/deans-advisory-board\/\">College of Engineering and Computer\u00a0Science<\/a><\/span><span class=\"gotham-book\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Science Dean\u2019s Advisory Board, and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucffoundation.org\/board-of-directors\">UCF Foundation Board of Directors<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"gotham-book\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Supported <a href=\"https:\/\/excel.ucf.edu\/programs\/gems\/\">Girls EXCELing in Math\u00a0and Science<\/a> as well as a mentorship\u00a0program for women in STEM<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/sidebar]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bot.ucf.edu\/person\/beverly-j-seay\/\">UCF Trustee Chair Bev Seay<\/a> believes\u00a0we\u2019d all be better off if we knew more\u00a0about computing and data analytics.\u00a0That\u2019s not to say everyone should be\u00a0computer scientists or data analysts,\u00a0but we should have an appreciation of\u00a0how both impact our work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like to see all UCF\u00a0students have the opportunity to gain\u00a0a level of understanding of computing\u00a0and data analytics in their chosen\u00a0fields,\u201d Seay says. \u201cThe shortage in\u00a0both areas is pervasive, so if we can\u00a0prepare our students to become\u00a0subject matter experts in their field\u00a0plus provide those skills, they\u2019ll have\u00a0far more career possibilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not surprising considering both\u00a0play a role in everything from the\u00a0shows we stream, the games we play\u00a0and the news we consume to how we\u00a0communicate, create and operate.\u00a0Seay admits she may be biased. After\u00a0all, everything from her career to her\u00a0volunteer work to the legacy she\u2019s\u00a0passing on to her daughters\u00a0and granddaughters revolves\u00a0around computing.<\/p>\n<p>So it\u2019s natural that Seay brings that\u00a0perspective and passion to her new\u00a0role as chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/bot.ucf.edu\">UCF Board of\u00a0Trustees<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cComputing is what I know,\u201d Seay\u00a0says. \u201cBut I also know business, and\u00a0I want to make sure we\u2019re preparing\u00a0our students for as many career\u00a0opportunities as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"archer-bold gotham-bold\">On preparing students for jobs<\/span><br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m very interested in the question\u00a0of whether higher ed is doing its job\u00a0to prepare students for careers and\u00a0the future. We can teach them the\u00a0mechanics of their education, but it\u2019s\u00a0just as important to offer experiential\u00a0learning, such as internships, so they\u00a0understand how what they\u2019re learning\u00a0is applied in the real world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"archer-bold gotham-bold\">On why she\u2019s committed to UCF<\/span><br \/>\n\u201cThis is my community, and what\u00a0goes on here is very important to\u00a0me. When I moved to Orlando, many\u00a0people in the community helped me,\u00a0and I want to give back. In a sense, I\u00a0feel like we\u2019ve grown together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"archer-bold gotham-bold\">On shifting from industry\u00a0to higher education<\/span><br \/>\n\u201cWhen I was in industry, I saw the\u00a0value of being close to the university,\u00a0whether we were funding research,\u00a0hiring graduates, working with the\u00a0faculty or doing community projects\u00a0together. It was natural for me to\u00a0become involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"archer-bold gotham-bold\">On what she\u2019s most proud\u00a0of from her career<\/span><br \/>\n\u201cAt SAIC, we worked closely with\u00a0UCF, the community, the customers\u00a0and our industry partners to make\u00a0Central Florida a global center of\u00a0modeling and simulation. I\u2019m very\u00a0proud that we were able to achieve\u00a0that as a community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"archer-bold gotham-bold\">On UCF\u2019s future<\/span><br \/>\n\u201cOur strategic plans ought to be\u00a0closely tied to the strategic plans\u00a0of Central Florida and the broader\u00a0Florida community. Being here for\u00a0our citizens at every stage of their\u00a0lives is really what we\u2019re about and\u00a0why we\u2019re here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a
