While children nationwide flocked to movie theaters\u00a0this summer for Toy Story 4<\/em> and The Secret Life of Pets 2<\/em>, a group of fourth- and fifth-graders in Orlando learned to animate their own film. The weeklong intensive camp was offered through a partnership between UCF CREATES and Page 15, a local nonprofit.<\/p>\n

The 20 elementary schoolchildren created a circus\u00a0show that featured a bodybuilding monkey with the\u00a0head of a rhinoceros, a tightrope-walking dinosaur\u00a0named Spike, and a pair of acrobatic, telepathic plate\u00a0spinners who resembled the Pringles chips man.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s amazing to see these kids and the spark that\u00a0happens when we help plant a little seed of what\u2019s\u00a0possible,\u201d says Stella Sung, director of CREATE and a\u00a0Pegasus Professor.<\/p>\n

Page 15 and CREATE were able to partner and form\u00a0the programming<\/a> after receiving a $100,000 grant\u00a0from Walt Disney World Resort. The grant was one of\u00a0five presented to nonprofit organizations throughout\u00a0Central Florida.<\/p>\n

UCF students served as mentors to the campers, who\u00a0spent their week at UCF Downtown<\/a> learning about\u00a0the fundamentals of storytelling and animation before\u00a0unveiling their original stop-motion film to parents and\u00a0friends on the final day.<\/p>\n

Although the Disney grant was a one-year funding\u00a0opportunity, Page 15 and UCF are committed to not only\u00a0keeping the programming going, but to expanding it.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome of the parents had tears\u00a0of joy. They were just like, \u2018I had\u00a0no idea my child was capable of\u00a0doing anything like this.\u2019 That\u2019s\u00a0one of the most satisfying\u00a0feelings ever.\u201d<\/p>\n
