Shally Wong, ’94, received the Ellison S. Onikuza Humanitarian Award during the inaugural Golden Dragon Awards banquet which was hosted by the Asian American Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida.

Wong was honored, along with her partner Gary Lau, for starting Asia Trend Magazine, a lifestyle, culture and entertainment publication that highlights achievements and news in the Asian American community.

Wong started the magazine in 2004 and it continues to grow annually. She was pleased to be honored for her efforts. “This award is very meaningful. The magazine is our passion. We have spent a lot of time and energy putting it together and promoting community events,” she said.

The award is in honor and in memory of U.S. astronaut Ellison S. Onikuza, the first Asian American to reach outer space. The award recognizes an individual or group which has demonstrated the highest ideals of courage, selfless giving, sacrifice, devotion and persistence in a significant project of endeavor which has benefitted, or will potentially benefit, the community.
