The University of Central Florida’s Landscape and Natural Resources staff plans to conduct a controlled burn in a section of the natural lands on the east side of campus Wednesday morning.

Prescribed burns are meant to safely remove excessive amounts of brush and undergrowth, reducing the chance of uncontrolled wildfires while encouraging new growth of native vegetation.

The area is in the wooded tract along the eastern edge of campus, distant from any UCF buildings. The area was last burned in 2009.

The UCF community should be aware of the smoke from the prescribed burn, because the plume may be carried by light winds toward the center of campus. But the smoke is expected to disperse quickly.

The Florida Forest Service is assisting the UCF team.

The day of the controlled burn could change based on weather conditions.
