Each summer, Theatre UCF brings three productions to its stages. In 2012, the University of Central Florida program is presenting No Sex Please, We’re British; Deathtrap; and Spike Heels.

No Sex Please, We’re British is a comedy by Anthony Marriott and Alistair Foot. A straight-laced newlywed couple innocently order Scandinavian glassware and but receive an unwelcome package instead. Farcical antics ensue as they try to hide the scandalous contents from friends, parents, bosses, and the law.

No Sex Please, We’re British will be directed by Theatre UCF department chair Christopher Niess. The show runs June 7-17, 2012 in the Black Box Theatre.

Deathtrap is being presented on the UCF Main Stage from June 21-July 1, and again from Aug. 23-26. The play is being directed by Be Boyd.

Deathtrap was written by Irwin Shaw, the same playwright as last summer’s Veronica’s Room, but has a lighter tone than the previous offering. Writer Sidney Bruhl has writer’s block and rather than seeking inspiration, he decides to murder his colleague and steal his masterpiece. The story has many classic mystery elements, including plot-twists, hidden messages, and some laughs.

Spike Heels was the first play by award-winning writer Theresa Rebeck to gain national recognition. The play is a sharply witty feminist take of “Pygmalion.”  The four characters are young and sexy, and the play humorously approaches sexual harassment issues at the same it poses some fun questions about intellectual superiority versus ‘street-smarts.’ The play will run July 12-22 in the Black Box Theatre.

Summer theatre is an opportunity for students to get more individual attention from faculty members, since the enrollment in summer is much lower. And just like audiences seek lighter fare in the summer months, the students also want to relax a little.

“[Spike Heels] is perfectly suited to university students,” said director Kate Ingram. “The roles are young and sexy, just like the actors filling them. And it is such a fun and smart script.”

Theatre UCF is on the UCF campus near the intersection of University Boulevard and Alafaya Trail in east Orlando. Performances begin at 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, and at 2 p.m. Sundays.
