Considered the most influential international ranking system in the world, the ARWU rates a variety of broad fields at research universities.

For Engineering/Technology and Computer Science, UCF ranked alongside Yale, Michigan State and Johns Hopkins among universities tied for 76th in the world. UCF ranked among the top 50 U.S. universities and the top 30 U.S. public universities in that category.

The ARWU uses six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of highly cited researchers selected by Thomson Scientific and the number of articles published in the journals of Nature and Science.

The ranking is considered one of the most prestigious because of the role research plays in the formula. The system was developed at the Center for World-Class Universities based at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China. It launched in 2003 to help determine how Asian-based universities ranked compared to the rest of the world. The university has been issuing the rankings annually ever since.
