This summer, UCF students will learn about the issue of hunger and homelessness in Orlando by participating in Volunteer UCF’s Sandwiches and Conversation, taking place June 29 and July 13 from 5:30-9:30 p.m.

Volunteers will bring peanut butter, jelly, or a loaf of bread and meet at the Lake Claire Pavilion to make sandwiches to bring Downtown Orlando. As they distribute the sandwiches, the students will have the opportunity to interact with the homeless population, giving them a chance to share their stories.

Volunteer UCF promotes and provides volunteer opportunities to the UCF community. VUCF not only plans volunteer events for students, but they also help connect students with nonprofit agencies to volunteer on their own time. In addition, VUCF has a database to track students’ volunteer hours as they complete them. Summer has traditionally been a planning time for the student leaders. However, this year they made a commitment to provide volunteer opportunities year-round, especially to incoming students arriving for Summer B.

The organization is reaching out to students in many ways including advertising and using social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter to inform students about upcoming events. The VUCF Board of Directors have planned over 20 events for Summer 2009, ranging from mentoring with the Boys and Girls Club, gardening at the UCF Arboretum and painting homes for the elderly.

On October 10, VUCF will hold its third annual campuswide day of service, Knights Give Back. Volunteer students, alumni, faculty and staff will come together and participate in this day of community service.

VUCF is an agency of the Student Government Association affiliated under the Office of Student Involvement in the Division of Student Development and Enrollment Services.
