As the economy takes a downturn, more and more children and families are living in poverty. At a poverty workshop held earlier this month at UCF Leesburg, future educators discussed the dynamics of poverty in area schools.
The workshop was sponsored by the UCF Leesburg chapter of the Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI). Workshop facilitator Barbara Thompson, from the UCF Office of Diversity Initiatives, discussed how educators can address poverty in their classrooms. Attendees learned about various socioeconomic groups and how to look at low-income individuals with the correct perspective.
Attendees received a copy of A Framework for Understanding Poverty, a workbook by noted authority on poverty Ruby Payne.
