The orientation helped the new students learn about upcoming instructional modules, their independent research projects, the role of diversity at the college and various student activities and organizations.
“It was fun, entertaining and provided lots of good information,” student Chris Cooper said of the fair. “And everybody at the booths was really friendly.”
The Internal Medicine Interest Group had a “Mystery Box” game where students were asked to reach in and indentify the medical tool inside. The COM Student Council provided much-needed coffee. Faculty members had fun – and prize-winning – quizzes based on the students’ knowledge of subjects ranging from foods containing vitamin K to macrophage, a cell that eats bacteria. The HB2: Structure and Function module booth honored the students’ upcoming anatomy lessons with gingerbread cadaver cookies containing bones and organ systems decorated with frosting.
Dr. Mohammed Khalil, assistant professor of Anatomy, presented the first-year students with a poster showing the College of Medicine’s commitment to diversity. “The new students are very excited” to be in medical school, he said. “You can see it in their eyes. They can’t wait to start.”
