BIOGRAPHY:

Sarah joined Dr. Melanie Beazley’s environmental chemistry lab in the summer of 2022 as a PhD student. She has a bachelor’s degree in Biodiversity and Conservation Biology from Cedar Crest College and a master’s degree in Entomology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She earned her master’s degree in chemistry en route and became a PhD candidate at the University of Central Florida in 2024. As a former zookeeper, she has a special interest in science communication and community engagement.

RESEARCH:

Sarah’s research focuses on nutrient remediation in Florida soils and sediments. Her primary project involves stormwater management and the ability of native Florida soils of variable properties to retain phosphorus before reaching water bodies downstream. Her secondary project involves carbon stability in coastal sediments, where she investigates metal distribution, microbial communities, and evaluates methodology.
