Healthcare informatics – or health informatics – is a relatively new discipline in healthcare that focuses on the technologies used to organize and analyze health data to improve health outcomes. The original focus of this field was on digitizing records and creating systems that communicated with one another. As the field matured, there is now an opportunity to capitalize on the “Big Data” movement where informaticists can take these digitized records and use the content to evaluate needs, assess trends, and predict the future of healthcare.
