The academic study of disability is rooted in a wide range of disciplines. Based on the study of culture (anthropology) and drawing from distinct disciplines, undergraduate students earning the Disability in Culture Certificate will learn about disability as a cultural construct in culture and society along with the varied views of the body from an interdisciplinary perspective. Students have the option to choose courses from anthropology, American Sign Language, writing and rhetoric, health sciences, interdisciplinary studies, gerontology and sociology to create an approach that aligns with their future goals.
Certificate Requirements
- Students must earn a “C” (2.0) or better in all Core Requirements and Restricted Electives. Students may make a request to the Undergraduate Coordinator to be granted the use of one C- toward the certificate requirements.
- A minimum GPA of 2.0 is required in all courses used to satisfy the certificate.
- Grades below “C” (2.0) in lower-level courses are not accepted.
- At least 9 hours used in the certificate must be earned at UCF.
- Only two anthropology courses can overlap for students enrolled in multiple anthropology programs (minors or certificates). (Note: The myKnight Audit cannot capture overlapping courses between two or more programs; therefore, students should have their program reviewed by the department before filing for graduation.)
- Students should consult with the Certificate advisor prior to graduation.
- Certificate advisor will consider special topics and other courses focusing on disability and culture on a cases-by-case basis for approval. Courses must be approved by the Certificate advisor.
Prerequisite Courses
- Students must satisfy each course prerequisite before enrolling in the class.
- Required prerequisites for disability electives vary by class.
