Walk into a theme park and the magic feels seamless. A ride launches without warning. A creature on a track turns its head toward you and reacts as you pass. Tens of thousands of people move through the gates and onto rides without ever feeling stuck. None of that is accident. It is theme park engineering, a coordinated stack of structural, mechanical, electrical, software and show systems, designed and verified by people whose entire job is making a complex experience feel effortless.
This is the discipline behind modern experiential design: how a ride is built, how it knows it is safe, how a creature on a track learns to act and how the queue keeps moving. Most of it never gets explained to the public. Some of the people doing the explaining work and teach in Orlando, less than a mile from Universal’s Epic Universe.
What is theme park engineering?
Theme park engineering is the multidisciplinary work of designing rides, show systems and the parks they live in so that the experience feels effortless and the people inside it stay safe.
It blends mechanical, structural, electrical, civil, software and show engineering, governed by global safety standards like ASTM F24, and produced by teams whose creative and technical specialists work side by side.
It is not one job. It is a coordinated set of disciplines whose only shared goal is making a guest’s experience feel safe and seamless.
Professor Peter Weishar, founding director of UCF’s Themed Experience graduate programs, breaks a themed experience into seven disciplines: storytelling, art and design, production, engineering, digital media, theater and hospitality. Engineering’s job inside that stack is to develop safe, dynamic and practical attractions, the systems that physically deliver the story.
Inside engineering itself, the picture stays multidisciplinary. Structural engineers design the buildings and the load-bearing systems. Mechanical engineers design the ride vehicles and the moving show elements, the work UCF mechanical engineering graduates have gone on to do at Walt Disney Imagineering. Electrical engineers design and supply the control and life-safety systems, the discipline behind Birket Engineering, the UCF-alum-led company whose equipment runs in Disney and Universal parks worldwide. Civil engineers handle the site and the structures that support it. Software engineers write the ride control logic. And show engineers, a discipline most people have never heard of, design the animatronics, the projection, the audio and the environmental effects that make a space feel alive.
How is a ride engineered from concept to safe operation?
Long before a ride opens, it has to be designed, modeled, prototyped, tested and certified, usually under tight schedule pressure and against international safety standards.
Student engineers at UCF do a smaller version of this process in competitions where the stakes are still real. The Society of Themed Entertainment Engineers and Leaders, the student-led club known on campus as STEEL, sends teams to the Ride Engineering Competition, where student groups design and build operational ride models from scratch under strict time and size constraints. At the 2025 Ride Engineering Competition hosted at Ohio State, STEEL president Bryanna Price’s team built a fully functioning flat ride model, applying controls, mechanics and problem-solving under real-world pressure.
The professional process scales up the same logic. Concept teams sketch the experience. Engineering teams turn it into structural loads, motion paths, force budgets and control logic. Safety teams certify it against the relevant standards. Construction teams build it. Commissioning teams test it extensively before a single guest rides. That last step is the one most visitors never see, and the one that decides whether a ride is allowed to open.
Mikel Garner, STEEL’s 2024 vice president and a mechanical engineering student, lived inside that process as a compliance and auditing intern at Universal Creative during Epic Universe’s development. His work applied ASTM International safety standards and engineering best practices to the rides being built next door to his university.
How do we know rides are safe?
The short answer: rides are built and certified to a global safety standard most guests have never heard of, then monitored continuously by dedicated life-safety hardware and software. The longer answer is where some of the most interesting engineering in the park lives.
Modern rides are governed by ASTM F24, the international committee that develops engineering safety standards for amusement rides and devices. F24 sets the design, testing and inspection rules the global industry runs on, and it is the framework UCF student engineers learn to apply through STEEL conference attendance, internships and competitions.
The person who chairs the safety body for the industry’s largest trade association also teaches at UCF. Universal Creative Vice President of Engineering and Safety Chris Oliver chairs the IAAPA Safety Commission, is a member of ASTM and holds multiple patents for ride-technology advancements. He earned his MBA at UCF and now sits at the center of the UCF/Universal Creative Lab, the industry-academy partnership where Universal engineers teach UCF students directly.
The supply chain has UCF fingerprints too. Steve Birket, a UCF electrical engineering and Rollins MBA graduate, leads business development at Birket Engineering, a provider of life-safety hardware and software control systems whose equipment runs in Disney and Universal parks worldwide. He sits on UCF’s Themed Experience advisory council, so the company building the safety control systems for the industry helps shape what UCF teaches about it.
What is show engineering, and how does it differ from ride engineering?
Ride engineering moves the vehicle. Show engineering brings the world the vehicle moves through to life. On a modern attraction the two run on the same clock.
Ride engineering owns the mechanical and structural side of the vehicle and its safe motion. Show engineering owns the rest of the experience the vehicle moves through: the animatronics that perform, the projection that paints walls and screens, the lighting, the audio and the environmental effects. On a modern attraction the two are designed to run together so the world reacts in real time to where the vehicle is.
The reason these are sometimes hard to tell apart is that they are taught and practiced as one craft inside places like UCF’s Themed Experience program. The faculty roster reflects that integration. Themed Experience instructors David Hoffman and Patrick Brennan together bring 67 years of Walt Disney Imagineering experience to the program, spanning EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, Magic Kingdom, Tokyo Disneyland, Tokyo DisneySea, Typhoon Lagoon and Splash Mountain Tokyo. They teach the creative-development and show-production side. The engineering side is covered through the College of Engineering and Computer Science, the STEEL club and the UCF/Universal Creative Lab, where more than 90 Universal Creative professionals have taught across storytelling, design, engineering and safety, legal, budgeting and business analytics.
How do parks engineer for the crowds?
Throughput is its own engineering problem. Small gains in how fast a ride loads ripple through the whole park, and the rest of the site has to be designed to feed it.
The discipline behind queue design, guest flow and ride throughput is one of the least visible parts of theme park engineering. It draws on operations research, simulation, mechanical loading-platform design and increasingly on data and software for things like virtual queues, where guests reserve a place in line through an app instead of standing in one.
Research on the management side of this discipline lives at UCF Rosen College of Hospitality Management, home to Florida’s first management-focused degree in theme park and attraction management. Assistant Professor Carissa Baker, who coordinates the program, is an IAAPA-Certified Attractions Executive and advises the Future Theme Park Leaders Association. Rosen College sits less than a mile from Universal’s Epic Universe, with six of the world’s top fifteen theme parks within reach and IAAPA’s world headquarters a short drive away. The college uses that proximity as a living laboratory for the operational side of park engineering.
What does this look like in real attractions?
A UCF civil engineering graduate led the team that built one of Disney’s most ambitious rides. UCF mechanical engineering students are building working ride models under deadline. UCF electrical engineering alumni make the safety hardware that runs inside major parks. The pattern is not anecdotal.
Jacqueline (Cade) King, a UCF civil engineering graduate, was a project manager on the Walt Disney Imagineering team behind Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, the simulation ride at the heart of Disney’s Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. As the project’s attraction producer she translated the creative vision into delivery, liaising between Imagineering and the other teams and overseeing everything from major conceptual developments to the smallest painted details. Her husband Gabriel King, a mechanical engineering graduate, also worked on Galaxy’s Edge.

A few miles from the parks she helped build, UCF’s STEEL club does the smallest, earliest version of the work she did. Bryanna Price’s team at Ohio State built a flat ride model that actually ran. What does it take to become a theme park engineer and where do you study it?
There is no single path. The field rewards engineers from civil, mechanical, electrical and software backgrounds, plus designers, show producers and people who can move between technical and creative teams without translation.
The career evidence sits inside UCF itself. Cade King ’12 came in through civil engineering. Gabriel King ’15 came in through mechanical. Steve Birket came in through electrical. Chris Oliver came in through an MBA, after a career in engineering and safety. Hoffman and Brennan came in through Imagineering after decades in the industry and now teach the next generation. The pipeline is not single-file. It is wide, and it runs in both directions, with students entering the industry and industry leaders coming back to teach.
For students aiming at the field directly, UCF runs several programs and pathways that map onto it. Its Themed Experience M.S. was the first stand-alone program of its kind at a public university. The Rosen College B.S. in Theme Park and Attraction Management, was Florida’s first management-focused undergraduate degree of its kind. The STEEL club gives engineering students hands-on themed-entertainment competition experience. And the UCF/Universal Creative Lab is a themed-experiences industry-academy partnership, with nearly 40% of participating Themed Experience students going on to work for Universal Creative.
What are the limits and what’s next?
The hardest parts of theme park engineering are the ones the audience never feels. Coordinating thousands of safety-critical components across years-long projects is slow, expensive and unforgiving of mistakes.
Cost and time are the real constraints. A major attraction takes years to design, build and certify. Every change late in the process cascades through structural, mechanical, electrical and software systems that all have to be re-verified. Standards like ASTM F24 exist for that reason. They give the industry a shared language for what counts as safe, but applying them takes time on every project.
The next decade is likely to push deeper into simulation and pre-visualization, so that more of the verification can happen virtually before steel is bent. UCF sits in the middle of that shift through Professor Carolina Cruz-Neira, director of UCF’s Institute for Simulation and Training and the first person inducted to the National Academy of Engineering for immersive technologies and virtual reality. Her foundational work in that field underpins many of the design tools the industry now uses. Themed Experience students collaborate with her group on projects that put creative ideas into engineering-grade environments before they get built.
