Driven by a desire to give a voice to the voiceless, Atiyah Appline ’20 ’22MPA came to UCF to earn a bachelor’s degree in social work and later earned a master’s degree in public administration. Choosing UCF meant proximity to her hometown of Melbourne, Florida, and a community dedicated to service.
“I want to make a positive change in the community. I love getting to know people and learning what inspires them. I am not silent; if I see someone being put down, I will help them,” Appline says.
While at UCF, she was active in the Student Government Association, advocating for broader scholarship eligibility and founding the Black Caucus to support Black students and student leaders. She also worked as a housing stability caseworker for Seminole County government, helping individuals experiencing homelessness rebuild their lives.
Appline serves as secretary‑treasurer of the Central Florida Urban League Young Professionals, a network providing leadership development, economic empowerment and community volunteer opportunities.
To students unsure about their path, Appline offers this advice: “I urge everyone to get involved. I was able to figure out my dream career just by joining organizations and interning. You get to make friends and network at the same time.”
Since graduating in spring 2022, Appline continues to make an impact on her community. Appline is under consideration for appointment to Salt Lake City’s Racial Equity in Policing Commission for a term ending Dec. 25, 2028.
