Civics Teaching Undergraduate Certificate

The Civics Teaching Certificate program will provide specialized knowledge in civics teaching in Florida focusing on content, pedagogy, assessment and civics-focused experiential learning which will enhance social studies education, political science, social science and interdisciplinary studies majors. Students pursuing social science teaching certification, including alternative certification, will develop specialized skills to teach civics and government geared toward Florida 6-12 instructional requirements. The program is open to all majors.

Certificate Requirements

• A minimum overall 2.5 GPA is required in courses used to satisfy the certificate.
• At least 9 hours used in the certificate must be earned at UCF within the participating departments.

Prerequisite Courses

• Students must satisfy each course's prerequisites before enrolling in the class.

Degree Requirements

Required Courses

• Complete the following:
  • POS3272 - Civic Engagement (3)
  • POT3206 - Political Ideals and the U.S. Constitution (3)
  • SSE4042 - Teaching Social Science as a Profession (3)

Restricted Electives

• Complete at least 1 of the following:
  • POS3413 - The American Presidency (3)
  • POS3424 - Congress and the Legislative Process (3)
  • POS4284 - Judicial Process and Politics (3)
  • SSE4323 - Teaching Civics in Florida (3)

Grand Total Credits: 12

Other Requirements

• Internship, independent study and substitute courses/new courses are allowed at the minor advisor's discretion
• No credit by exam (TSD, Military credit) may be used
